Scammers targeting international students
Monash University Safer Community Unit is currently aware of a scammer targeting international students looking for accommodation. Persons loiter within and around campus and surrounding streets, approach young students and strike up a conversation stating there is an apartment to rent. Fake advertisements are sometimes placed on a Chinese website. Cash loans are asked for upfront often $2-3,000 for various reasons. The money is never paid back. Be very careful who you give money to.  Do not give cash. Do not transfer via money wires

Ensure you deal with reputable real estate agents or from off-campus housing.  Go to the agent’s office and sign paperwork. Recorddownloadidentification if you are concerned. Protect yourself – Do not give money to people who approach you on the street or on campus. If you give money voluntarily you are responsible. It is rare to get your money back.
