Exam rules
Make sure you follow the exam rules. If you get sick or are affected by a serious situation that prevents you from sitting your exam, consider applying for special consideration. Remember, once you have started an exam, you are no longer eligible to apply for special consideration and you cannot cancel your exam once you have started it but do not complete it. If you are unsure of what to do, contact Student Rights.

Free hard waste rubbish collection for students living in the City of Monash
The City of Monash is offering free waste collection for current students living in the City of Monash from 20 November to 15 December. Book  your rubbish collection online and before the Sunday night of your collection week, place your hard waste out on the nature strip for collection. Contact Council’s waste services on 9518 3774 or email anna.mezzetti@monash.vic.gov.au for more information.

New Summer Unit – ATS2910 Professional and academic presentation skills
Are you interested in improving your confidence when presenting in front of an audience? This intensive 6 point unit is being taught 4 hours a day for 2 weeks in January. This unit is open to all students and is structured in streams to accommodate different levels of language confidence. Learn from professional staff who are experts in the fields of public speaking and vocal work and improve your stage presence and delivery. For more information about this unit, contact the Centre for Theatre and Performance. For questions about how this unit can fit into your course, you will need to contact your faculty.

University end-of-year close down period
Please note that the University will close at 5pm on Thursday 21 December 2017 for the end of year and New Year period. The University will reopen at 9am on Tuesday 2 January 2017. During this time, you may contact the following services if required:

Opportunities

Volunteers needed in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia in January 2018
We are seeking expression of interest from students who would like to volunteer at the Monash Pre-departure briefings in January 2018 (between 8-18 January, however exact dates are yet to be confirmed). You will be helping to
 meet and greet new students and their parents, assist with the registration desk,  share your Monash journey and answer any questions from students and parents. This is a great opportunity to help support new students coming to Monash. Selected volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation.

If you will be in Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia at this time and you are keen to help out, register your interest. Please note, this is a volunteering opportunity and travel expenses will not be covered.

Become an adviser for Monash Non Residential Colleges (NRC)
Non-Residential Colleges at Clayton, Caulfield and Peninsula are recruiting student leaders for our program in 2018! Organise and run college events, engage with the NRC community, mentor and share your experience with other students. Each adviser is allocated 12 students to mentor and time required per week is estimated to be about 3-4 hours a fortnight.
What’s in it for you?
– Obtain formal training and professional development including Mental Health First Aid and SafeTalk
– Develop leadership, teamwork and intercultural competency skills
– Work closely with a team of like-minded students and establish contacts outside your existing networks

Who are we looking for?
– Students willing to participate, make new friends and have fun

– A friendly and welcoming person

Second Chance Camp: Battle of the Decades 
If you missed MSA’s camp during your first year and want to do it all again, this is the camp for you. Second Chance Camp is a host scheme camp that is open to all Monash students – both new and returning. This is a great way to make new friends on a 2 night getaway. Accommodation, food, transport to and from the camp site and access to exciting activities are all included in the ticket price ($100).

Where: Lord Somers Camp, Cnr of Lord Somers Rd and Parklands Avenue, Somers, VIC 3927 (located by the beach)

Do you have a passion to help new international students settle in?

International Student Engagement delivers services that introduce Monash diverse culture and support to help international students engage confidently with fellow students and the broader community.

We provide volunteering opportunities throughout the following programs:

• Pre-arrival briefing sessions and webinars
• International Student Enrolment Week
• Orientation sessions for international students
• Social Activities

We are seeking expression of interest for Semester 1, 2018 at enrolment and orientation sessions in the Clayton and Caulfield Campus. You will need to be available for a training session date in January and during enrolment week (12-16 February 2018) and orientation week ( 19 – 23 February). Please express your interest by registering online.

Tips for International Students

Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Did you know that any medical treatment you received while outside of Australia, whether or not in connection with a course of study, is not covered by your OSHC? If you are travelling to a foreign country  for study or holidays, you should consider purchasing travel insurance.

Through the alumni networks, you can take advantage of professional development and networks, career advice, employment opportunities, programs, and discounts, and engage in the many social events that are held across the world. Career help after you finish your course
Whether you are returning home or considering your work options in Australia, you are still able to access all services through Career Connect for up to 12 months after your course completion. Award Finalists for Victorian International Education Awards 

Congratulations to the following Monash students who were finalists for the International Education Awards for Higher Education.

Pratik Ambani
Finalist for International Student of the Year – Higher Education

Pratik is currently in the final year of Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) and is interested in Project Management and Consulting. He is the Projects Director at Australian Federation of International Students Inc. (AFIS), Volunteer Store Supervisor at Australian Red Cross, and was an International Student Ambassador for ‘Work Rights & Exploitation – Peer-to-Peer Support Program’ that was run by Meld Community for the Victorian Government. Pratik was also a participant at Leadership Excellence with John Bertrand and is currently the National President for the Australian Chapter for Network for International Law Students (NILS). He is an ambassador for the Faculty of Law at Monash and a Student Mentor for Monash Postgraduate Association and Monash Law Students’ Society. In his free time he enjoys sketching and numismatics.

Varsha Devi Balakrishnan
Finalist for International Student of the Year – Higher Education

Varsha is completing her final honours year in the Bachelor of Arts and hopes to continue her studies next year in a Masters of International Development Practice. Throughout her degree, Varsha participated in AIME mentoring, the Amnesty Monash Committee and the Peer Ambassador Leadership (PAL) program for the Faculty of Arts. Varsha has a particular interest in helping international students in their transition to college and university life and was selected as the new upcoming Education Officer for Monash University International Student Services (MUISS) for 2018. Varsha is an active volunteer and student ambassador and has a keen interest in working with marginalised communities. Varsha is a co-facilitator for the PAL program in her spare time she likes to bake and do recreational weightlifting.
