The justice system is founded upon the rule of law. This can be quickly eroded through show trials or trials perceived as such. Adequate and impassioned defence and representation of unpopular minorities is imperative to maintain the rule of law over public or political priorities

Speakers:
Professor George Hampel AM QC
David Manne RILC Executive Director
Elizabeth O’Shea Maurice Blackburn Lawyers
Robert Stary

MC for the event: Dick Gross

Date: Thursday 8 March, 2012
Time: 6.30pm – 8pm
Tickets: $25, and can be purchased from here.

Drinks and canapés provided.

4. Indeed, it has been millions of ordinary Arabs—men and women, Muslim and Christian, poor and middle class, young and old—who have challenged the assumptions of both Islamist extremists and Western imperialists on how change can take place as a result of their quest for political freedom and social justice. Professor Zunes, an authority on both Middle Eastern politics and civil insurrections, will examine the recent and ongoing struggles in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Western Sahara and elsewhere, their implications for Western powers, and the prospects for democracy.

5.
