Indeed, it has been millions of ordinary Arabs—men and women, Muslim and Christian, poor and middle class, young and old—who have challenged the assumptions of both Islamist extremists and Western imperialists on how change can take place as a result of their quest for political freedom and social justice. Professor Zunes, an authority on both Middle Eastern politics and civil insurrections, will examine the recent and ongoing struggles in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Western Sahara and elsewhere, their implications for Western powers, and the prospects for democracy.

1.
