Public Lecture \u2013 All Welcome<\/p>\n

The power of strategic nonviolent action\u2014which has previously brought down autocratic regimes from the Philippines to Poland and from Chile to Serbia\u2014has made its mark on the Middle East during the past sixteen months, challenging the legitimacy of both pro-Western and anti-Western regimes as well as military occupations in the West Bank and Western Sahara. Indeed, it has been millions of ordinary Arabs\u2014men and women, Muslim and Christian, poor and middle class, young and old\u2014who have challenged the assumptions of both Islamist extremists and Western imperialists on how change can take place as a result of their quest for political freedom and social justice. Professor Zunes, an authority on both Middle Eastern politics and civil insurrections, will examine the recent and ongoing struggles in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Western Sahara and elsewhere, their implications for Western powers, and the prospects for democracy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
