1. Commercial CPD Seminar<\/span><\/h4>\n

The introduction of the Civil Procedure Act 2010 (Vic) has been an important development in Victorian legal practice.<\/p>\n

This Seminar explores two issues brought squarely into focus by the legislation.First, the increasing prospect of costs orders being made against practitioners. Second, the ethical issues raised for practitioners in matters where one party is a self represented litigant.<\/p>\n

2. Great Law Week Debate – \u201cFree Speech Isn\u2019t Free Enough in Australia\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n

Witness a team of prominent Monash Law Alumni battle it out with current Monash Law Students, over this highly controversial topic at the annual Great Law Week Debate.<\/p>\n

2011 World Universities Debating Championship winner and Senior Policy Officer for the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Fiona Prowse (BA\/LLB 2012), will lead the alumni team to argue \u201cFree speech isn\u2019t free enough in Australia\u201d, supported by well renowned barrister Shivani Pillai (BA\/LLB) and Kylie Lane (BEc(Hons), LLB(Hons), DipLang (Japanese) 2005) a highly regarded Senior Associate at Ashurst.<\/p>\n

Proving this point won\u2019t be easy against the Monash Law students\u2019 team consisting of Duncan Wallace (Law\/Arts) former winner of the Monash Senior Moot and Monash Junior Moot and a semi-finalist of the AAT Moot, Beatrice Paull (Law\/Arts) a recent Octofinalist at 2013 Australian Novice Intervarsity Debating Championships and Sam Myers (Law\/Arts) a semi-finalist in the 2012 Junior Moot, and winner in 2013.<\/p>\n

Overseeing the Great Law Week Debate as moderator is current Monash Law student David Jancik (Law\/Arts(Hons)), who currently works as a Legal and Business analyst a Piper Capital.<\/p>\n

3. Get Active Week<\/span><\/h4>\n

To offset the negativity with the onset of cold weather, Federal government announcements and the ongoing construction in the Law building, staff and students are encouraged to lift their spirits and become involved in the university\u2019s Get Active Campaign being held 6-12 May 2013. Please see details below:<\/p>\n

  • The Get Active Campaign is all about;<\/li>\n
  • Getting Out of the office and into some fresh air and sunshine,<\/li>\n
  • Getting Involved in some good old fashioned community togetherness,<\/li>\n
  • Having Fun- goodness knows we all need some of that at the moment- and;<\/li>\n
  • Getting Active- which will help us feel better all round.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The first ‘Get Active Week’ Campaign across Monash University is being held 6th and 12th May 2013. The themes of the week are to Get Out, Get Involved, Have Fun and to Get Active.<\/p>\n

    Monash Sport will be hosting a number of special events across Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula campuses, as well as making a number of existing service offerings free of charge for Monash students and staff members. All information is hosted on the Get Active Week website: www.monash.edu\/sport\/get-active-week<\/p>\n

    All activities are free to get involved in but what\u2019s needed is for as many students and staff to join in the Fun! It would be great if as many people from the Law Faculty got out and got active!<\/p>\n

    Some of the marquee events happening during the week include:<\/p>\n

    • BBQ & Sporting Challenges – Join us for lunch on the Menzies lawn Tuesday 7 May from 12:30pm and take part in sporting challenges<\/li>\n
    • Menzies Stair Climb – Challenge yourself on the stairs! From 1pm on Thursday 9 May we’ll be taking the stairs to the top of the Menzies Building and want you to join us!<\/li>\n
    • Campus walks – Stretch your legs in your lunch breaks! Campus walks will be taking place at all campuses throughout the week.<\/li>\n
    • Mother’s Day Classic – Get Active Week will culminate on Sunday 12 May, with TeamMONASH participating in this annual event in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Participate with friends, family, and as a part of the Monash University community!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      4. World Red Cross Day Forum<\/span><\/h4>\n

      Are you interested in International Humanitarian Law, Crisis Relief or volunteering with the Red Cross? Wednesday 8th May celebrates World Red Cross Day – a day to recognise the efforts of both staff and volunteers at an international and local level. The Red Cross Victorian Youth Advisory Committee are hosting a free public forum, with speakers presenting on the theme of ‘Everyday Acts of Humanity’. There will be presentations from international humanitarian law, international disaster relief and local volunteering teams, as well as the opportunity to find out about how to become involved in the Red Cross movement.<\/p>\n
