Industrial Relations Society of Victoria Invitation

Each year the Industrial Relations Society of Victoria conducts a function which is specifically for students in the areas of industrial relations, employee relations, and labour law. This year the event is to be held on Wednesday 18th September .

The intent is to have students meet and mingle with students from other institutions and to hear a little about the activities of the society. The event also has short speeches given by experienced practitioners in the area, and there is an opportunity to discuss career options and plans. Primarily, however, it is a social event for students to learn something of the activities of the IRSV.

Details are as follows:

Date: 18 September 2013
Time: 6-8pm
Location: Fair Work Commission, 11 Exhibition Street, Melbourne CBD

More Information

3. Workplace Bullying and the Brodie Panlock Prosecution

The tragic suicide in September 2006 of 19 year-old Brodie Panlock changed the way our community thinks of workplace bullying. Her horrendous victimisation at the hands of her colleagues both shocked and angered us. It also changed the manner with the law approached workplace bullying. First, there was the ground breaking WorkSafe Victoria investigation and prosecution that led to convictions and fines of $335,000 for the four men responsible, and for the company that ran the café where the bullying took place. Next there was the introduction in Victoria of “Brodie’s Law” – amendments to the Crimes Act 1958 that makes serious bullying a criminal offence. And more recently there have been reforms to the Fair Work Act. Come and hear about the ground breaking WorkSafe Victoria investigation and prosecution from the person who led and oversaw it – Stan Krpan, then Director Legal Services and Investigations with WorkSafe Victoria. Stan will discuss with us the nature of the relentless bullying that led to Brodie Panlock’s suicide, the manner with which the investigation and prosecution proceeded, and the challenges that had to be overcome. The presentation is open to all Law Faculty staff and students. RSVP is not required.

Date: Tuesday 10 September 2013
Time: 1-2pm
Location: Lecture Theatre R4 in the Rotunda

1.
