1. 16th National Family Law Conference 2014<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n

This year\u2019s National Family Law conference will take place from\u00a0Tuesday 7 until Friday 10 October<\/strong> at the Hilton Sydney and has a truly eclectic program which is sure to be not only interesting for students, but also educational and beneficial for studies and resumes.<\/p>\n

There are currently 800 registered delegates and this number is increasing
\nevery day. The conference will be using an app instead of a printed program, and the app is available on the app store now for download. To look at the conference program and speakers who will be presenting this year, type in FL14 into the app store on either your Apple or Android device and download.<\/p>\n

There is a heavily discounted student rate of $250 for the day and many social functions on offer. In particular, the New and Young Lawyer\u2019s Evening at Paddington\u2019s Bowls Club,\u00a0Thursday 9 October.<\/strong> This event costs $40 and will provide students with the opportunity to interact and network with recent graduates, gain a real understanding of what to expect post studies and receive advice and tips on how to achieve their goals.<\/p>\n

2. ADR Seminar<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

The Australian Centre for Justice Innovation (ACJI)<\/a> is proud to present a free public lecture:<\/p>\n

“Early Neutral Evaluation: A useful addition to the ADR smorgasbord?<\/a>“<\/em>
\nPresented by Chief Magistrate of Victoria, Peter Lauritsen & Dr Paula Gerber

\nAll too often mediation is the default position for parties and lawyers wanting to use ADR to resolve a dispute. However, there are many different ADR models, and some maybe more appropriate to the nature of the dispute and parties than mediation. This seminar will provide insight into the use of Early Neutral Evaluation (ENE) in a variety of jurisdictions around the world and identify when it might be appropriate to use, and the pros and cons of broadening our ADR options.<\/p>\n

\nJon Stanhope, Administrator of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (2012 -2014), Chief Minister of the ACT (2001 \u2013 2011)<\/p>\n

Since 2012 Mr Stanhope has been responsible for both the Cocos (Keeling) islands and Christmas Island, the site of many asylum seeker arrivals and a large detention centre
\nIn 2004, during his time as Chief Minister of the ACT, Jon Stanhope introduced a Human Rights Act, which was the first legislation of its kind on human rights in Australia.<\/p>\n

4. National Law Honours Student Conference<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n

The National Law Honours Student Conference provides graduating LLB and JD students and recent graduates with the opportunity to present their law honours research, senior research thesis or comparable major research project in an academic setting. Session chairs in the students\u2019 research field will offer constructive feedback and advice, including possible publication. There is a prize for best presentation, attendance is free and lunch and drinks are provided. A keynote address will be provided by Ass Prof Katherine Biber, of UTS Law Faculty, and the Hon Kevin Lindgren AM QC, former Federal Court Judge, will be the distinguished chair of prize-giving. Attendance is by invitation only upon submission of the paper abstract.<\/p>\n

6. VADR: Metal Health Complaints Commissioner<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

You are cordially invited to a VADR CPD event will take place on Tuesday 28 October, 2014<\/strong> when Lynne Coulson Barr, the new Mental Health Complaints Commissioner will speak on the topic “New approaches to resolving mental health services complaints.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The need for an independent specialist mental health complaints body was identified from community consultations and feedback in the context of mental health legislative reforms consultations. The Mental Health Complaints Commissioner was established under the Mental Health Act 2014, and commenced operation on Tuesday 1 July, 2014<\/strong>. Lynne Coulson Barr is Victoria’s first Mental Health Complaints Commissioner and will provide an outline of the role of the office and approaches to resolution of complaints about mental health services.<\/p>\n
