\n<\/span>ACJI Free Public Lecture: Future of the Courts, Presented by His Honour Judge Kevin Burke <\/span>Former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan once said that,<\/span><\/p>\n


\n\u201cWhat the people want is an America as good as its promise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n


\nThat is what they want of their courts.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nPeople want courts that are fair, efficient and effective. \u00a0And in a democratic society, they want a court system that is a strong (yet respectful) branch of government.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n2. Commercial CPD Seminar \u2018The Role of the Courts in Commercial Arbitration\u2019 <\/span><\/h3>\n


\nAs the practice of domestic and international commercial arbitration in Australia continues to grow, so too does the prevalence of applications seeking the support or intervention of the courts in arbitration proceedings. Our panel will discuss the role of the courts in such applications, including in applications to enforce or set aside arbitral awards, as well as in applications designed to support arbitral processes such as applications for the issue of subpoenas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n3. Gender Equity and STEMM, Monash University\u2019s Participation in Athena SWAN Pilot<\/span><\/h3>\n


\nMonash University has been selected to participate in the Science in Australian Gender Equity (SAGE) Pilot of the Athena SWAN Charter. The Charter, led by the<\/span><\/p>\n

Academy of Science, aims to address under-representation of women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine) disciplines through a<\/span><\/p>\n

transparent, evidence-based system of gender equity accreditation.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>Monash is now commencing its work under Athena SWAN to qualify for the Bronze institutional award, in recognition of the University\u2019s commitment to bolster women\u2019s leadership roles within STEMM fields. The pilot aligns with the University\u2019s strategic focus on improving the representation of women in STEMM and will allow us to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, which will be as subject to rigorous peer-review from mid-2017.<\/span><\/p>\n
