(30 March)<\/h2>\n<div class=\"g-group l-lg-mar-bot-6 l-md-mar-bot-4 \">\n<div class=\"g-cell g-cell-10-12 g-cell-md-1-1\">\n<div class=\"has-user-generated-content\">\n<div class=\"text-body-medium\" data-automation=\"listing-event-description\"><strong>If Google&#8217;s acquisition of FitBit is approved, what does this mean for personal data and consumers?<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-automation=\"listing-event-description\">\n<p>The European Commission and the U.S. DOJ have approved the controversial Google\/Fitbit merger based on a static, conventional view according to which only limited issues arise from a merger of complements.<\/p>\n<p>This presentation will suggest that there are unprecedented concerns in a merger case such as this one, which allows Fitbit\u2019s data-gathering capabilities to fall in the hands of Google. Indeed, such a merger creates major risks of extension of monopoly power and consumer exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>Digital healthcare is a major growth area, and the combination of Fitbit\u2019s health data with Google\u2019s other data creates unique opportunities for discrimination and exploitation of consumers in healthcare, health insurance and other sensitive areas.
