Value adding your essay writing

_PU17006The Library is a great starting place for your essay research. You are bound to find a lot of useful information – good quotes, good ideas, good data. But if your essay just collects this stuff together, with a few of your words connecting quotes together the answer to the topic will not be strong. Markers are looking for more than the information – they want to know what you think about it. Try this four step process to integrate the things you have read into your essay.

1. Introduce the item (this could be the topic sentence for the paragraph – a sentence which says what the theme of the paragraph is).
2. Put in the quote (or paraphrase or summary of the item).
3. In your own words, say what is the most important thing about that item (the part of it that contains the important message/information).
4. Connect it to main theme you are discussing.

If you work on these matters you will improve your grades because you will show the reader you understand the ideas you are writing about.
Good writing!
