Nineteenth-century research now easier

A new online resource is available to assist Monash researchers who are trying to discover which books or other primary source materials were available in the nineteenth century and before the end of the First World War.

The Nineteenth-Century Short title Catalogue (NSTC) aims to define the printed record of the English-speaking world from 1801 and 1919. It includes all books published in Britain, its colonies (including Australia) and the USA, as well as all books in English and all translations from English. It also indexes thousands of periodicals, directories and other ephemeral publications.

The catalogue includes well-known and obscure works of literature, important translations, legal documents, political pamphlets, medical and scientific monographs, and journals.

The information has been complied following an exhaustive process and includes information from major library catalogues in the United Kingdom and the USA.  The new online resource offers users the opportunity of building a research bibliography of citations and saving it to a personal archive, or printing, emailing or downloading it.

The Nineteenth-Century Short Title Catalogue is available through Search.  It is recommended that you log in to Search.
