Men of Stamina, women who Dare

Advertisements exhibition

Advertisements and advertising materials are the focus of the latest exhibition from the Rare Books Collection, which opened at the Matheson Library, Clayton last week.

The exhibition, to be on display until 5 June 2014, can also be viewed online.

The Library collects ephemera like advertising posters and brochures in support of research by social historians and others.  The importance of preserving these valuable but ephemeral cultural assets was emphasised by Gene Bawden, Deputy Head, Design (Communications Design) , Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, who opened the exhibition.

Men of Stamina, women who Dare includes materials demonstrating the development of modern advertising trends such as celebrity endorsements; includes classic Australian advertisements; and each item, dating from the 1890s to the present, provides a snapshot on the preoccupations of Australians at that particular era.
