A guide for effective academic research on the internet

off-campus2

Chances are you use the internet to find information for your assignments and other academic research.

Knowing how to search for and evaluate internet resources effectively will not only save you time but improve the quality of information you find. Believe it not, you need the skills to know which information is appropriate and which is not appropriate for use in your academic field.

Academic research on the internet is a series of interactive modules to help students to conduct effective research on the internet. They cover:

  • Why you might use the internet for academic research
  • How to find “grey literature”, which is information, data and parliamentary and other reports from governments and organisations that are published electronically
  • Finding and using materials placed on “open access” by academic and other institutions
  • How to evaluate websites and documents
  • Effective ways of using Google Scholar and searching websites
  • Managing your internet sources.

Take a look at the tutorial online, which is interactive with quiz questions and guided demonstrations to assist with learning. The modules can be taken separately as needed.
