International Year 12: What to do if you don’t get the EAL score you need?

International Year 12 students may not receive an offer through VTAC due to not meeting the ATAR or English language requirement for the Monash undergraduate course and/or Monash College course they applied for.

The following English language tests are accepted by Monash University and Monash College as meeting English language requirements provided students meet the required ATAR for the course they applied for:

1. Pearsons Test of English (Academic)

  • The Monash University undergraduate minimum English language requirement for Pearsons Test of English (Academic) is an achievement of a minimum overall score of 58 with no PTE communicative skills score below 50. Please note some courses require a higher result.
  • The Monash College Diploma Part 2 minimum English language requirement for Pearsons Test of English (Academic) is an achievement of a minimum overall score of 50 with writing communicative skill score of 50

  • Results of the exam are returned in 5-7 business daysThe quick return of results will enable you to meet English language requirements prior to Semester 1 commencement dates.

2. Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System Academic)

  • The Monash university undergraduate minimum English language requirement for Academic IELTS is an overall score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0.  Please note some courses require a higher result.
  • The Monash College Diploma Part 2 minimum English language requirement for Academic IELTS is an overall score of 6.0 with writing 6.0.   For more information regarding this test visit: www.ielts.org
  • Please note the long waiting periods and results return may prohibit students from commencing in Semester 1 (this is important for those applying for an undergraduate courses with no Semester 2 intakes).

3. TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • Monash University and Monash College only accept the Internet or Paper based TOEFL.
  • The university minimum English language requirement for Paper based TOEFL is a total score of 580with a TWE of 4.5 or internet based TOEFL total score of 90 with 22 in Writing and no section lower than 20. Please note some courses require a higher result.
  • The Monash College Diploma Part 2 minimum English Language requirement for Paper based TOEFL is a total score of 523 with a TWE of 4.5 or internet based TOEFL total score of 69 with Writing score of 21

In order for applicants’ English proficiency test to be considered they must register and sit for the English test from the 17th December 2013.

4. Monash English Bridging (MEB):

If you have the required ATAR however have not met English language requirements you might be eligible for Monash English Bridging (MEB). By successfully completing MEB you can meet Monash undergraduate entry requirements for most courses (Faculty of Law and some courses within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences do not accept the MEB).

The duration of MEB is 10 to 15 weeks, therefore if eligible students are packaged with a conditional offer, which therefore means you will have to commence your university studies in Semester 2 or available intake.

MEB start dates for 2014 admission are 17 March (15 weeks) and 23 April (10 weeks)

Monash University and Monash College Diploma Part 2 apply the most recent demonstration of English proficiency as the basis for assessment. Where an applicant has completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, only the most recent measure is considered.

How to apply:

Applications can be submitted directly to International Recruitment Services from 14th January 2014. Please provide a certified true copy of your English language proficiency test with your application.
