{"id":1198,"date":"2013-04-03T13:57:44","date_gmt":"2013-04-03T02:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-blogs-monash-edu.pantheonsite.io\/rural-health\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2013-04-04T12:33:32","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T01:33:32","slug":"warragul-student-earns-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/2013\/04\/03\/warragul-student-earns-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Warragul student earns scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monash University Year 4C medical student, Caroline Shipley, has earned a scholarship to assist in her studies with the School of Rural Health in Gippsland.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline, who is studying at the Warragul Campus of Gippsland Regional Clinical School, is the recipient of this year\u2019s \u2018Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Opportunity Scholarship \u2013 Physical Disability.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship is a boost for Caroline, who has already achieved remarkable things to pursue her medical studies.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline had a stroke at age 26 after she had a rare brain tumour removed, which has left her with some residual problems like balance and easy fatigue. \u00a0Caroline also has arthritis and required knee surgery last year following a fall on a ward round.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these issues and the obstacles involved as a single parent of a child with special needs, Caroline is continuing her studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst I&#8217;m still very much engrossed in the study, fascinated by the human body (and how much we still don&#8217;t understand, particularly in the fields of genetic and immunology) I&#8217;ve reached that point in a medical student\u2019s career where it&#8217;s very clear how little I actually know and how long and difficult this journey is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould I still do it knowing then what I do now? \u00a0Absolutely, but I might have deferred a year or two and spent more time at home with my child whilst he was still little.
