East Gippsland Regional Clinical School, in partnership with Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS) and Gippsland Region Rural Maternity Support Program, recently held an Obstetric Emergency Workshop for medical students and midwifery staff at the School\u2019s Bairnsdale Campus.<\/p>\n
Obstetric emergencies are topics\/procedures that are embedded into the Year 4C medical curriculum, while midwifery staff are required to practice clinical knowledge and skills annually to maintain competencies.<\/p>\n
The workshop participants included 10 Year 4C medical students and seven midwifery staff from BRHS. Tutors were BRHS midwifery educator Ms Lynne Hammond, Midwife Ms Angela Kellock, Clinical Midwife Consultant, Ms Kylie Osborne and General Practitioner Dr Elizabeth Boyd. <\/p>\n
The workshop started with two short presentations and discussions, one the \u2018Introduction to new neonatal resuscitation guidelines\u2019 presented by Kylie Osborne and a second case presentation \u2018Trauma in Pregnancy\u2019 presented by Dr Elizabeth Boyd.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of the presentations the students were divided into multidisciplinary groups to rotate around four skill stations; post-partum haemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation, shoulder dystocia and vaginal examinations.<\/p>\n
Evaluations from participants demonstrated the workshop was informative, with contemporary knowledge. They welcomed the opportunity to practice clinical skills in a simulated environment that supported interprofessional collaboration and facilitated the sharing of clinical knowledge.<\/p>\n
Some of the comments from participants included, \u201cFabulous- well worth our time. Excellent knowledge, tutors and facilities,\u201d and \u201cVery well organised with great info and tutors.\u201d
