{"id":3200,"date":"2014-08-08T11:54:38","date_gmt":"2014-08-08T00:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-blogs-monash-edu.pantheonsite.io\/rural-health\/?p=3200"},"modified":"2014-08-08T11:54:38","modified_gmt":"2014-08-08T00:54:38","slug":"students-enter-the-%e2%80%9cflipped-classroom%e2%80%9d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/2014\/08\/08\/students-enter-the-%e2%80%9cflipped-classroom%e2%80%9d\/","title":{"rendered":"Students enter the \u201cflipped classroom\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Developing Health Professional Educators: Connecting Science and Theory with Learning for Clinical Practice <\/em><\/strong>was the theme of this year\u2019s annual Australian and New Zealand Association of Health Professional Educators <a title=\"Opens ANZAHPE 2014 home page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anzahpe.org\/#!2014-conference\/c22t1\">(ANZAHPE) conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three members of staff from the School of Rural Health attended: Senior Lecturer SRH Churchill, Dr Kathy Brotchie; and Dr Cathy Haigh and Bill Haigh from the SRH Latrobe Valley &amp; Warragul.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Brotchie presented a paper on the 2013 Year A cohort students\u2019 responses to a survey on the clinical skills program at SRH Churchill which \u00a0used an innovative approach to teaching clinical skills known as \u201c<a title=\"Opens a Monash eLearning blog item explaining flipped learning\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/elearnaccfin\/2014\/05\/02\/flipped-classroom-or-flipped-learning-whats-the-difference\/\">the flipped classroom<\/a>\u201d. Using this approach, Students are expected to \u00a0learn the theory before coming to class (exploring the online resources and readings. Class time is then used to apply the theory.<\/p>\n<p>Provided with personalised feedback from tutors in facilitated hands-on sessions, students reported favourably on their confidence, level of preparation and the usefulness of the feedback provided to them using this pedagogical structure.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, entitled \u201cMore than going through the motion: first year medical students\u2019 responses to a Flipped Classroom approach to teaching\u201d, was included in a session exploring innovations in medical education.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3202\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3202\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3202\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/files\/2014\/08\/Conference-graph-ANZAHPE-2014.jpg\" alt=\"Topsy turvy: Year A students endorsed the flipped classroom approach to learning clinical skills.\" width=\"430\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Topsy turvy: Year A students endorsed the flipped classroom approach to learning clinical skills. <\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Developing Health Professional Educators: Connecting Science and Theory with Learning for Clinical Practice was the theme of this year\u2019s annual Australian and New Zealand Association of Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) conference.
