{"id":3204,"date":"2014-08-08T12:04:15","date_gmt":"2014-08-08T01:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-blogs-monash-edu.pantheonsite.io\/rural-health\/?p=3204"},"modified":"2014-08-20T10:11:02","modified_gmt":"2014-08-19T23:11:02","slug":"students-gain-hands-on-health-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/2014\/08\/08\/students-gain-hands-on-health-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Students gain hands-on health experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3206\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3206\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3206\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/files\/2014\/08\/Neonate-session1.jpg\" alt=\"Hands-on: a local secondary school students gets up close to a neonatal unit during a Hands-On Health day at Sale.\" width=\"430\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hands-on: a local secondary school students gets up close to a neonatal unit during a Hands-On Health day at Sale.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Forty-five senior secondary school students from Sale, Maffra and Yarram had a taste of working in the health sector when they took part in a Hands on Health day in Sale on 30 July 30.<\/p>\n<p>Based loosely on a similar program at Monash University Clayton campus, the Hands on Health Workshop was put together by Ros Pearce and staff from the SRH East &amp; South Gippsland in collaboration with Central Gippsland Health Service (CGHS) and local secondary schools.<\/p>\n<p>It was held at the School of Rural Health\u2019s \u00a0Sale site, under the auspices of the Community Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Senior students from Sale, Maffra and Yarram secondary colleges, Gippsland Grammar School and Sale Catholic College, interested in pursuing a career in health, attended.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They were given interactive experiences in their area of particular interest and well as relevant information. Areas covered were Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Ros said the students would hopefully benefit from the hands-on and relatively informal program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have found that students are keen for information,\u201d she said. \u201cThe objective is to give them an idea of the pathways to various careers in health; that t is not the end of the world if you don\u2019t get the ENTER score you initially hoped for. We want to open their eyes to the various options available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former SRH student, now a junior doctor at Sale Hospital, Paul Marosszeky, spoke to the students interested in pursuing medicine as did two Year 3 medical students. Other staff from Monash and CGHS Allied Health and nurse education areasalso conducted sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Following informal group sessions, the students were given a tour of the hospital and also took part in some interactive scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>They were asked to complete an evaluation at the end of the day to ascertain whether or not this is something that should be continued in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forty-five senior secondary school students from Sale, Maffra and Yarram had a taste of working in the health sector when they took part in a Hands on Health day in Sale on 30 July 30.
