Or a one horse race?<\/a> PhD<\/li>\n<li>Angela Crombie &amp; Evan Stanyer: <a title=\"Opens the abstract as a PDF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ruralhealth.org.au\/13nrhc\/images\/abs_Stanyer%2C%20Evan.pdf\">Development of regional dementia services pathways<\/a> PhD<\/li>\n<li>Peter Orpin, Judi Walker, Matthew Carroll, Kim Boyer: <a title=\"Opens the abstract as a PDF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ruralhealth.org.au\/13nrhc\/images\/abs_Orpin%2C%20Peter.pdf\">Supporting Rural Ageing Well: How important is the rural?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Keynote addresses<\/h2>\n<p>The  Opening Address by Senator Fiona Nash, Assistant Federal Minister for  Health, announced an overhauled and much fairer GP Rural Incentives  Program which means smaller rural communities would be able to more  easily attract and retain GPs. Some 450 rural and regional towns will  receive greater incentives to attract GPs from 1 July 2015.\u00a0 An  independent expert panel consulted with stakeholders before compiling a  report for the Minister, using the new Modified Monash Model to classify  rural and regional towns and cities.\u00a0 Minister Nash acknowledged the  work of this expert panel and gave particular acknowledgement to  Emeritus Professor John Humphreys for his work as a member of the expert  panel and for the Modified Monash Model.<\/p>\n<p>Professor John  Wakerman from Flinders NT presented a keynote address on the Monday  afternoon entitled \u201cResearch excellence, knowledge exchange and policy  development\u201d.\u00a0 This presentation drew on the work of the Centre of  Research Excellence in Rural and Remote Primary Health Care to examine  the key features of an effective knowledge exchange process.\u00a0 John  discussed the Modified Monash Model and also acknowledged the work of  John Humphreys and Matthew McGrail.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens a webcast recording of the presentation\" href=\"http:\/\/webcast.gigtv.com.au\/Mediasite\/Play\/acd13f4271f74eba87ab9e3519b6d7f01d?catalog=be25f4e9-34b7-4c0e-bc92-93cb13986c2chttp:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3833\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/files\/2015\/06\/john-wakerman.jpg\" alt=\"John Wakerman talked about research and policy development\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Click to view John Wakerman&#8217;s presentation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr  Carole Reeve, a PhD student of the Centre of Research Excellence in  Rural and Remote Primary Health Care (CRE), based at Alice Springs,  presented a very interesting and thought provoking opening address on  the Sunday evening entitled \u201cThe challenge of providing fair care\u201d also  referring to the work of the CRE.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens a webcast recording of the presentation\" href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/webcast.gigtv.com.au\/Mediasite\/Play\/a1d869ca4cb9488b9fb25933418cff071d?catalog=be25f4e9-34b7-4c0e-bc92-93cb13986c2c\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3838\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/files\/2015\/06\/carole-reeve.jpg\" alt=\"carole reeve\" width=\"450\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><em><br \/>\nClick to view Carole Reeve&#8217;s presentation.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Networking<\/h2>\n<p>The  conference was jam-packed with entertainment, information and lots of  food.\u00a0 Importantly, it provided wonderful opportunities for our School  of Rural Health staff and students to connect with other researchers and  services from across the country who are interested in similar areas.<\/p>\n<p>Although  there was little time available to see the sights of Darwin, a few  managed to find a little time to wrestle with crocs and enjoy the local  cuisine.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lisa Lavey<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2015 13th National Rural Health Conference was held in Darwin from 24-27 May 2015.\u00a0 The conference was well attended with approximately 1200 attendees.
