{"id":964,"date":"2013-03-05T14:52:31","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T03:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-blogs-monash-edu.pantheonsite.io\/rural-health\/?p=964"},"modified":"2013-03-05T20:18:27","modified_gmt":"2013-03-05T09:18:27","slug":"maybery-lectures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/2013\/03\/05\/maybery-lectures\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental health research takes to the road"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_965\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-965\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-965\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/rural-health\/files\/2013\/03\/audience-shot.jpg\" alt=\"The audience was attentive to every word delivered by Associate Professor Darryl Maybery.\" width=\"430\" height=\"261\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The audience was attentive to every word delivered by Associate Professor Darryl Maybery.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Associate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monash.edu.au\/research\/people\/profiles\/profile.html?sid=25260&amp;pid=4922\">Professor Darryl Maybery<\/a>,\u00a0 Director of MUDRIH, has delivered the first of Mildura\u2019s 2013 lecture series to a wide audience of medical and local community members.<\/p>\n<p>Darryl\u2019s topic was <em>\u2019Breaking the generational cycle of mental illness\u2019<\/em>, and coincided with the launch and promotion of a new DVD titled <em>Family Focus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One in five children has a parent with a mental illness; the aim of the Family Focus program is to empower families to start a conversation about the problems, with the intended outcome to reduce the risk of children getting the same illness as their parent.\u00a0 The chance to talk about these illnesses helps children realise that the depression and anxiety they see in their parents is not their fault.<\/p>\n<p>Information about the event was circulated through flyers to health organisations and individuals, radio announcements, and advertisements in local newspapers.\u00a0 Consequently 70 registrations were received from a mixture of health clinicians and public, which packed the lecture room to capacity.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a one-hour lecture, Darryl summarised the background research and statistics which led to the development of the DVD and associated website which have been devised by Children Of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI).\u00a0 The DVD is freely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copmi.net.au\/familyfocusdvd\">available <\/a>via the Family Focus website.<\/p>\n<p>Head of School, Professor Judi Walker, was in Mildura on the day of the lecture, as were Associate Professor Leigh Kinsman, Cathy Ward, Hilton Gruis, Dr Anton Isaacs, and Graham Allardice. All joined the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Future topics for the Mildura Lecture series include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Close the Gap\u00a0 in conjunction with the Mildura      Aboriginal Health Service (March)<\/li>\n<li>ASPREE launch (April)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>&#8230;and also a hit in Bendigo<\/h2>\n<p>Darryl also presented the lecture at Mercy St, Bendigo to health professionals, medical students and members of the public, again speaking about his research into the generational cycle of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>He outlined to the group how children of parents with a mental illness are at a high risk of developing learning difficulties, relationship problems, substance abuse or low self-esteem as well as a mental illness.
