We\u2019ve teamed up with BUPA to provide Monash staff and students access to an online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oha.bupa.com.au\/media\/bupaAusHRA\/corpEnter.aspx?prod=YPMg1XGoozI%3d&amp;orgID=hr6cDAs2398%3d\">Health Assessment Tool\u00a0<\/a>to tell us just that.\u00a0 If you took the assessment last year, why not see how your health might have improved this year?<\/p>\n<p>The online survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and looks at all areas of your personal health \u2013 from diet and exercise, to stress and lifestyle factors.<\/p>\n<p>Once completed, you\u2019ll get your own personalised report outlining your health age (as opposed to your chronological age), and some handy tips to improve your overall health and wellbeing to reduce your health age. There were 9 sponsors supporting the event and 253 people registered, including some from 10 other non-Monash organisations. The keynote address was delivered by Jessica Watson who sailed solo around the World at 16 years of age. Another highlight was the presentation of a mock court which was enjoyed by all while delivering an important, serious message.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx _2vxa\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_2cuy _3dgx _2vxa\">Feedback from attendees indicates that this was the best OHS Conference. Check out some of the great photos <a href=\"https:\/\/monash.facebook.com\/groups\/everyoneatmonash\/permalink\/1112994702212075\/\">here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3x-2\"><\/div>\n<h3><a name=\"wellbeing5\"><\/a>\u00a0Thunderstorm Asthma<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re a hayfever sufferer, you probably already know that grass pollen season officially kicked off on October 1 and will continue to late December.<\/p>\n<p>In late 2016, Melbourne experienced a unique combination of high grass pollen levels alongside certain type of thunderstorm weather phenomena in which heavy thunderstorms caused pollen to burst into smaller particles which were easily inhaled<a href=\"https:\/\/edit.blogs-monash-edu.salsa.hosting\/timeout-newsletter\/files\/2018\/10\/thunderstorm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5316 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/edit.blogs-monash-edu.salsa.hosting\/timeout-newsletter\/files\/2018\/10\/thunderstorm-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/timeout-newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2018\/10\/thunderstorm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.monash.edu\/timeout-newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2018\/10\/thunderstorm.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> and caused asthma symptoms \u2013 wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath.\u00a0 Thousands of Melburnians were affected, even some who had never experienced asthma or asthma-type symptoms in the past. \u00a0This was the largest epidemic of thunderstorm asthma in the world and many people required medical support.<br \/>\nThose who carry an increased risk of asthma triggered by a thunderstorm include people with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>asthma or a history of asthma<\/li>\n<li>undiagnosed asthma<\/li>\n<li>seasonal allergic rhinitis (hayfever) particularly to grass pollens, with or without asthma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People with hayfever have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/videos\/thunderstormasthma-hayfever\">highest risk of asthma flare-up<\/a> triggered by thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Even though not all thunderstorms trigger thunderstorm asthma and thunderstorm asthma events are rare, it\u2019s important to know how to prepare and manage care for ourselves and those around us.\u00a0 So, what can you do?<\/p>\n<p>Prepare<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brush up on your <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.nationalasthma.org.au\/resources\/First-Aid-Asthma-Chart.pdf\">asthma first aid<\/a> management skills and knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Seek advice from your GP if you wheeze during spring or if you experience hayfever, especially if you have or suspect you have an allergy to ryegrass pollen<\/li>\n<li>Request an updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalasthma.org.au\/living-with-asthma\/asthma-action-plans\">asthma action plan<\/a> from your treating doctor<\/li>\n<li>Follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.health.vic.gov.au\/public-health\/environmental-health\/climate-weather-and-public-health\/thunderstorm-asthma\/forecasting\">Three Day Servicing Forecast<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you have bad hayfever, try to avoid being outside on high pollen count days, particularly on windy days and during thunderstorms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Provide<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Plan: Encourage colleagues with asthma to provide their personal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalasthma.org.au\/living-with-asthma\/asthma-action-plans\">asthma action plan<\/a> to their area First Aiders<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: Remember the 4 Steps of Asthma First Aid\n<ul>\n<li>Give 4 puffs of reliever medication with a spacer and wait 4 minutes<\/li>\n<li>If there is no improvement, give 4 more puffs<\/li>\n<li>If there is still no improvement, dial Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance<\/li>\n<li>Keep giving 4 puffs every 4 minutes until emergency assistance arrives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More information is available <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.allergy.org.au\/patients\/asthma-and-allergy\/thunderstorm-asthma\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"wellbeing6\"><\/a>Consumers interested in healthy beverages<a href=\"https:\/\/edit.blogs-monash-edu.salsa.hosting\/timeout-newsletter\/files\/2017\/01\/water12.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4378\" src=\"https:\/\/edit.blogs-monash-edu.salsa.hosting\/timeout-newsletter\/files\/2017\/01\/water12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\":2tn\" class=\"pG\">\u00a0Do you consume<span class=\"_4yxo\"> healthy beverages<\/span>?
