Dear students,

In this edition of the Student Newsletter we share some useful tips, as well as fun events happening around campus.

Final semester students
The end of semester will be here before you know it and it’s time to plan ahead. You might be considering further studies or employment in Australia or perhaps you are preparing to pack your belongings and farewell some of your friends. Either way, there is a lot of useful information online to assist you with your preparation.

Seminar for international students returning back home
Register for either Clayton or Caulfield campus to attend an information session where you can find out about graduating, organising your finances, re-directing your mail and readjusting to life back home. Light refreshments will be provided.

Top ten tips for international students applying for permanent residency

Stay Smart Online
It’s important to understand the simple ways you can protect your personal and financial information online. You can check out videos on how to avoid online shopping scams and protect your information here.

Melbourne International Student Conference
This conference is hosted by the City of Melbourne and Meld Community and provides an invaluable opportunity for students to develop themselves personally and professionally. Topics include establishing purpose, being a change maker, leading change and making a positive impact on the international student experience. Register to become a volunteer or attend.

Seminar Survival Series
Ever wondered how to do your tax? Need some strategies to de-stress? In these free weekly sessions the MSA Welfare Department will explore a wide range of issues students face and suggest ways to fix them. For more information, visit the MSA website.

University Mental Health Day
Australia’s University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day is coming up! This year’s theme is Community. Stay tuned, because Monash will be holding a number of events and activities to raise awareness and help students overcome mental health difficulties.
When: Tuesday May 1

On-campus counselling services
Counselling can help you deal with problems coping with university life, anxiety or depression, loneliness, drug and alcohol abuse and addictions, negative feelings or suicidal thoughts and relationship or family issues. Our counsellors will work with you to help you find the cause of the problem and solutions or ways to cope. You can make an appointment at any of our Caulfield, Clayton, Parkville or Peninsula campuses here.

Sign up to become a Youth Ambassador with the City of Monash
Do you live or study in the City of Monash? Become a Youth Ambassador to work with other young people in the community and help them express their ideas and concerns. Find out more here.

Monash Hackathon
Do you see injustices in this world and want to be a catalyst for change? Do you see ways that university life can be better and want your chance to change it at Monash and the broader community? Join the Monash HackaMon and work with a team to develop ideas and solutions to problems – whether for a new startup or for innovations that solve societal or environmental problems. There is a $10 deposit to get involved but you will be reimbursed on arrival and your food and drink will be included for the hack event. There is also a mixer on Friday 13 April at 4.30pm at Clayton.

What’s On

Join AFIS for a visit to Wilsons Promontory
Come along on a day trip to the beautiful Wilsons Promontory. For just $40 you will get to see wombats, emus and kangaroos, check out the magnificent Tidal River, hike up Mount Oberon summit for incredible views and walk along the famous Squeaky Beach. Ride with TeamMONASH at the 2018 MS Melbourne Cycle
Team up with us to see the sights of Melbourne while raising funds to fight multiple sclerosis (MS). The MS Melbourne Cycle is fun, free and suitable for cyclists of all skill levels, from newbies to cycling hotshots. There’s also a free TeamMONASH jersey up for grabs for first time participants. Click here to sign up.

Multicultural Cricket
Cricket Victoria has launched the International Student Academy Program which aims to use cricket as a vehicle for student wellbeing (physical and mental) and help breakdown the associated barriers to social inclusion. The University/TAFE Cup will be held on Saturday April 28. Players of all experiences are welcome to enter teams into 3 divisions – competitive, social and women’s for your chance to win. Water Wise
Water Wise is an “Introduction to Swimming” program aimed at increasing water safety awareness and swimming ability of Monash students. This program is fun, free and is held at the Doug Ellis Swimming Pool on Clayton campus. The next program intake is April 9, 2018. For more information, visit the Water Wise website.

Free tickets to an Aussie Rules Football Game
Keen to learn more about the great Australian sport of AFL? Thanks to the Melbourne Football Club, we have a number of tickets to attend an AFL match as well as a hands on basic skills session!

Melbourne FC v North Melbourne FC: Sunday April 7th, from 11am at Goshs Paddock and the MCG.
