1. Nominations for the Sir John Monash Medal

Each year, the Faculty of Law awards the Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement.

The Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a student who:

  • has completed the academic requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws and is eligible to graduate;
  • is judged to have an excellent academic record; and
  • has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing the University’s goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Nominations for the Sir John Monash medal close this Friday 16 February 2018.

A nomination can be made by the student, a fellow student, and any Monash staff member or any member of the community by completing the nomination form.

All nominations must include a letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination and a statement from the nominee addressing how he/she meets each of the eligibility criteria. Please also provide any supporting information which could be of use to the selection committee and permission from the student to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee.

Please submit your completed nomination form and any supporting documentation to the Faculty of Law Student Services Manager via online submission from by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday 16 February 2018.

2. Global Legal Hackathon at Monash Law – get involved

The countdown is on! Monash University is excited to bring the inaugural Global Legal Hackathon to Melbourne.

Taking place in 40 cities worldwide over the weekend of 23-25 February 2018, this unique opportunity is now open for registration.

Do you have a tech solution to fix some of the legal industry’s biggest problems? Want to engage with some of the industry’s most high profile people in the legal tech space?

The Global Legal Hackathon brings together the world’s leading legal thinkers and doers in support of a unified vision: rapid development of tech solutions to progress the legal industry and the function of law and justice.

What’s in it for me? Build your skills, knowledge and employability by making sure you’re part of the first legal hackathon of its kind. You don’t need to be a tech whiz – if you’re a problem solver looking for a challenge the Global Legal Hackathon is for you.  Come with your own ideas or form a team with friends.

3. Law Building renovations

As you know the Law Building at Clayton Campus has been closed to all staff and students since the end of last year. The ground floor is undergoing an extensive refurbishment to bring you an exciting new student space!

Access to the building has now resumed. However, the full refurbishment is not expected to be completed until the middle of 2018.

If you have any questions or concerns about the temporary closure of parts of the Law Building please don’t hesitate to contact us on 1800 MONASH (666 274), in writing via ask.monash or come to see us in person at the Law Student Services Counter.

Student Services

Your Student Services staff are now available in the normal location on Level 1 of the Law Building.

There will be no change to the Law Student Services counter operation hours:

Monday: 8:45am – 4:00pm

Tuesday: 8:45am – 4:00pm

Wednesday: 10:30am – 4:00pm

Thursday: 8:45am – 4:00pm

Friday: 8:45am – 4:00pm

As usual we will still be available to assist you with all administrative requests, to be sent through ask.monash for a timely response.

Law Library

The Law Library is once again open to students from 8:00am – 6:00 pm Monday – Friday.

From Orientation Week (WB: February 19) normal Semester hours resume, as follows.

Monday – Friday: 8:00am – 9:00pm

Saturday – Sunday: 1:00pm-5:00pm

Note that Reserve books for Law Summer units will remain at Hargrave-Andrew Library until February 19. These are accessible until 9:00pm (Mon, Tues, Thurs) and 1:00pm-5:00pm on Sundays. Please contact Law Library staff on lib-lawteam-l@monash.edu with any queries.

4. Write for the ILA Reporter

The ILA Reporter (ilareporter.org.au) is the official blog of the Australian Branch of the International Law Association (ILA).

The ILA Reporter provides analysis, commentary and discussion on issues in public and private international law which have bearing on Australia and the wider region.

The ILA Reporter accepts articles on a rolling basis from academics, legal practitioners, and students. This is a great opportunity to be published by a well-respected non-government organisation with a wide readership.

5. Submit an article to the UCD Law Review

The UCD Law Review is Ireland’s leading student-run legal journal. The Review is published on an annual basis, with guidance provided by our academic advisors. The Review features articles on a variety of legal topics, written by students as well as those in academia and in practice.

The Board welcomes contributions on a broad range of contemporary legal issues, as well as articles addressing legal history.

Articles for consideration for inclusion in the 18th Volume are to be submitted in word format to  ucdlawreviewsubmissions@ucd.ie by 30 March 2018.

The email should contain the Author’s name, year of study or graduation, and contact details. The selection process is entirely anonymous so please do not include any indications of identity in the article.

A prize of  €500 will be awarded to the author of the most outstanding article.

The Board will consider articles as they are submitted and offers may be made prior to the deadline. Late submissions may be accepted at the discretion of the Editor. Further details, including information on submissions and the editorial process, may be found at  www.ucdlawreview.eu.
