SRH researcher recognised at USA conference
A more dynamic teaching environment for SRH students is one expected outcome from Michelle Machado’s recent attendance at the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) conference.
Michelle, from SRH Churchill, attended the June conference in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, with the support of the SRH conference fund.
Part of Michelle’s involvement in the conference included presenting a poster on ‘Anatomy learning and retention among medical students in a graduate-entry MBBS course: A cross-sectional study’.
“The main theme of the conference this year was around integration between basic science and clinical teaching,” Michelle explained.
“Consequently, many sessions focused on team-based learning (TBL) and the flipped classroom model as ways of introducing horizontal and vertical integration in a MBBS/MD program.
“To gain an in-depth understanding of this, I participated in a workshop focusing specifically on TBL and the dos and don’ts of designing and delivering a successful TBL session.
“As part of developing the teaching for the new 2015 curriculum, my aim is to trial the TBL technique this year and to share the knowledge acquired during the conference with my colleagues so that we can create a dynamic teaching environment for our students,” she said.
During the opening ceremony of the conference, Michelle was awarded a certificate of recognition for receiving the inaugural IAMSE Educational Scholarship Grant for her research project. The award money has been allocated to the project and, upon completion, she will be required to publish and present at the 2016 IAMSE conference. Michelle was also awarded the ESME (Essential Skills in Medical Education) Certificate for her participation in the ESME course in 2013 and successful submission and recognition of an ESME report. She is now enrolled in the IAMSE Medical Educator Fellowship Program.
“Many of the individuals who enrolled and completed the ESME course in 2013 have also proceeded to the Fellowship program which is overseen by individuals on the IAMSE Board of Directors. It is great to be supported by such a qualified and diverse group of experts and to be able to support my peers as we progress through the Fellowship program,” she said.
