Ode to the OSCEs

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

With the OSCEs just around the corner we thought it appropriate to publish this poem penned last year by Gillian Fallon from the Bendigo Regional Clinical School as an ode to the OSCEs.

All is quiet
The air is tight
Fingernails are there
To bite

Heads in hands
Toes a-tapping
Furrowed brows
Jaws firmly clenched
Waiting, waiting
For the OSCE
To commence.

Bell has rung
Move to station
Frantic read
Scribble notes
And seek
Inspiration

Again the bell
Take the plunge
Open the door
Your consult
Has begun

Minds a-scrambling
Pulses racing
Breathe in deeply
Yes, take a breath
Relax…

Slow the speech
Talk succinctly
Listen to the patient
Be calm, keep cool.

The bell peals out
The consult ends
What’s done is done
Move on.

The OSCE’s have
Just begun.

Bendigo supports inventor awards

Monday, October 1st, 2012

Bendigo Regional Clinical School is a significant sponsor of the Bendigo Inventor Awards for the third year.

The Bendigo Regional Clinical School Silver sponsorship of the Bendigo Inventor Awards, contributes money and time to benefit our community. Graham Allardice representing Monash sat on the inaugural committee in 2010,  Pam Harvey was our committee member in 2011 and Kerrie Thomson, Regional Manager of the Bendigo Regional Clinical School, sits on the committee this year.

This year has again been a massive success, demonstrated by the number of inquiries, continual demand for support from innovators, popular attendance at support events, some international entrants to the awards and media attention – not to mention the employment that has been created for Central Victoria by some of the past entrants!

The awards and exhibition ceremony will see 60 inventions on display at the Bendigo town hall on 12 October 2012. Free tickets are available now by calling (03) 5434 6100

In mid July, the Monash University Surgical Interest Group (MUSIG) held its inaugural Surgical Trauma Night at the Bendigo Regional Clinical School.

MUSIG has held similar workshops in metropolitan hospitals for clinical school students at Eastern Health and The Alfred Hospital as well as workshops for Pre-Clinical students at Monash University.
Given the success of those workshops, MUSIG wanted to expand the events to students based in rural hospitals. (more…)

Old hospital makes way for the new

The landscape of Bendigo has changed with the demolition of buildings to make way for the new Bendigo Hospital site at the back of the Anne Caudle Centre.

The landmark tall chimney that was part of the laundry building for the old hospital and has stood for half a century, has been demolished as part of the demolition works. In the original hospital briquettes were burnt to generate steam and the tall chimney was for the smoke and combustion gases.

After removal of asbestos over many weeks, the demolition of the boiler house, chimney, commercial laundry, in-ground diesel tanks, building foundations, redundant services and equipment has started. The Ambulance Victoria building alongside the Bendigo Regional Clinical School will also be removed soon.

The photos show the old building as it was, works taking place as part of the demolition and the after photo with the chimney removed from the landscape.

Vocal Fremitus, Bendigo RCS's student/staff choir, perform at the opening of the St John of God annual art show

Vocal Fremitus had its inaugural performance at the opening of the annual St John of God art shop in mid-May.

With the rural health program’s emphasis on developing close relationships with local health services and embedding students in the local community, the opening seemed the perfect occasion for a performance.

The brain child of Associate Professor Pam Snow and Professor Geoff Solarsh, Director of the Bendigo Regional Clinical School, the choir provides an opportunity to extend that tradition into the realm of fun and music. The choir is made up of both students and staff. (more…)

Teddy Bears take the dread out of doctor

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Bendigo primary school students have had their fears and anxieties about going to the doctor diminished thanks to medical students and a collective of teddy bears!

Medical students from Monash and Melbourne Universities took part in a Teddy Bear Hospital for children at Camp Hill Primary School. The grade one and two students took part in several workshops, which aimed to educate the children as well as reduce the anxiety and nervousness that goes with going to the doctor or the hospital.

Performance results validate rural program

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

One of the most common questions asked at Open Day is: will I be disadvantaged educationally by studying outside Melbourne? Students are concerned they will miss out on resources and support provided to their Clayton-based counterparts. An analysis of Year 4 MBBS assessment results for 2011 has clearly demonstrated this is not the case. (more…)
