Have you registered for the GLOBAL Monash walk/run?

All Monash staff are invited to take a step toward better health and participate in the Monash GLOBAL walk/run.global-mymonash  More than 500 staff have already registered to take part in the event.

Delivered in conjunction with Wellbeing at Monash, Monash Sport and Andrology Australia, the fifth bi-annual GLOBAL walk/run coincides with Men’s Health Week – aiming to increase the awareness and knowledge of men’s health.

Staff can register to participate in the on campus GLOBAL 3km walk or 5km run.

Former Olympic swimmer Matt Welsh will be attending the Clayton event, courtesy of the staff health insurance discount offered by BUPA.

Participation is key to good health at Monash

As part of the University’s commitment to creating a culture of productive, engaged and healthy employees, an organisational Wellbeing Key Performance Indicator has been introduced. warm up

With an increasing focus by the government on strategies to support Australians to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, staff participation in wellbeing events will be assessed at Faculty and Department level.

Staff are encouraged to participate in the great range of wellbeing programs available, aiming to achieve 30% staff participation. The percentage of participation will be reported on OHS Scorecards.

Programs include: GLOBAL walk/run, Staff Wellbeing & Activity Program, Mental Health First Aid, TeamMONASH events, Mindfulness seminars and training, Health Revolution, 10,000 Steps Challenge, Mental Health Week seminars and campus specific activities.

If you are you ready to make a change to your health and fitness, now is the time to join the Get Well challenge!

20 Monash Clayton staff recently participated in the launch of the demo-outdoor-exercise-2Get Well Challenge with great results.  Darlene McGown from Faculty of Education has enjoyed being part of the program.

“I have really enjoyed each session and working out with a great group of ladies from all across the University. Our instructor has been encouraging us to achieve things that we never thought we’d be able to do and there is lots of support from the group to keep pushing ourselves! If you want to get fitter and more active I would highly recommend you participate in the program”.

Caulfield 8 week program:
Suitable for beginners, the program will help you to increase your health and fitness by participating in two outdoor Get Active sessions per week.

Dates: Program to commence week of 11th June.  45minute Get Active sessions will be held twice a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday at Caulfield campus.
Cost: $10 per session ($160 payment for 8 week program)

Gippsland 6 week Challengepilates

Monash Sport in conjunction with the Office of PVC Gippsland, Wellbeing at Monash, MRS and Latrobe Leisure Churchill are pleased to announce the new Get Well Gippsland 6 week program.

The 6 week program is suitable for all levels of fitness and will provide staff  with the opportunity to participant in up to 24 classes. The program runs Monday – Thursday each week, at a cots of $5 per class.

Lunchtime Weight Watchers Program

Staff the opportunity to enrol in a new Weight Watchers Program. With the convenience of weekly meetings on campus*, you’ll get the guidance that you need to succeed and stay on track to achieve your weight loss andWeightWatchers2 lifestyle goals.

About the program: The program consists of one weekly lunchtime meeting for 13 weeks
Cost: $18.90 per session for 13 week program (payment must be made upfront by cash or card at the first meeting). Some private health insurance providers provide a partial refund.

Kyle Vander Kuyp – Sporting Seminar

As part of our ongoing service commitment to the Monash community, Monash Sport are pleased to announce our next Monash Sport Seminar.

Former Australian Olympic athlete Kyle Vander Kuyp will present ‘overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals’ as an opportunity to for you to increase your health and fitness knowledge.

Topic outline: “Overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals”

“In 2004, I was pushing my body and mind to the max. I had a bit of a rough patch and although I’d won the national title, I missed the Olympic qualifying time by one-tenth of a second. That meant I had to go to Europe and keep trying, putting me under more pressure”

Kyle’s sporting achievements and career highlights are 12-time National Champion, including eight consecutive titles, and Australian Record Holder for the 110m Hurdles (13.29 seconds) and 60m Hurdles (7.73 seconds). He has competed at two Olympics, four World Championships, four Commonwealth Games and two World Cups.

Fit Camp – Upcoming Sessions

Fit Camp is a six week fun, social, challenging and rewarding way of training. For those about to embark on their first fitness program or looking for a new challenge Fit Camp is for you. Our flexible program structures are suitable for those who are just starting or those that are looking to take their fitness to the next level! The most important thing we include however is a positive team atmosphere that will leave a smile on your face at the end of each session!

Caulfield: Commencing Tuesday 19 June:

Tuesday & Thursday 5.30pm – 6.30pm (2 sessions per week).

Clayton: Commencing Monday 18 June:

Monday & Thursday 6.45am – 7.45am (2 sessions per week).

Monash Sport has been running Fit Camp for about four years now, and in that time we have developed a loyal following amongst our participants. Fit Camp is designed to give people workouts they wouldn’t get using machines in the gym.

The beauty of working out outside is we can use the grass and terrain to our advantage, which allows us to design a workout in almost any sort of conditions. When the weather is great, the classes are held outside, when it’s cold, dark and wet, the workouts can be modified to be run inside our Fitness Centres.

Fit Camp is also a team effort, and the nature of the program provides support to those who are doing it for their first time. At Monash Sport we can tailor each session to suit anyones fitness level.

Clayton Extended Operating Hours

Based on the success of our three month trial, the Health and Fitness Centre at Clayton campus will be permanently extending its operating hours to 9am to 6pm on Sundays!

Being the centre of healthy and active lifestyles at Monash University, this decision is based entirely on member feedback and demonstrates our commitment to facilitating a more welcoming environment across more of the week.

If you’re in favour of this step towards providing effective services and solutions to members training needs, make sure you make the most of this fantastic opportunity to get in early for your Sunday session. All 12 month and direct debit members have reciprocal access to Clayton health and fitness centre to make the most of this opportunity.

New Group Fitness Classes!

The Monash group fitness fanatics will welcome two all new trial classes to be introduced across Caulfield and Clayton group fitness timetables in addition to our existing quality programming.

 

Clayton campus – commencing Tuesday 12 June

Clayton campus will host Aqua Zumba, a twist on one of the most popular group fitness classes from the Zumba range of dance inspired fitness programs. This innovative new class adds an element of water resistance combined with a cardio workout which provides a safe, challenging, water-based fitness alternative in a low impact, supervised environment.

Held in the newly refurbished Doug Ellis Swimming Pool, Aqua Zumba classes commence Tuesday 12 June at 7.00am and will run for a trial period of four weeks. Each Aqua Zumba session runs for 45 minutes and can be accessed by Group Fitness, Aquatic and Centre membership holders. Casual visitors are also welcome.

Caulfield campus – commencing Thursday 7 June

Caulfield campus will benefit from the addition of the new Nia classes. Nia Technique has evolved over a quarter of a century to blend movements and concepts from Dance Arts, Martial Arts and Healing Arts into a dynamic routine.

To be performed by Certified Nia Instructor Carolyn Yuen, Nia classes are performed to music with each participant encouraged to move at his or her own level of intensity, adapting the moves to their body potential and needs at any given moment. The result will assist participants pleasure of living in their bodies by relieving stress, whilst strengthening and toning muscles. Nia technique may also encourage weight loss and improve flexibility, balance, mobility, endurance, posture and co-ordination.

Nia classes will commence on Thursday 7 June, 1.00-2.00pm. Classes will be available to group fitness membership holders and casual visitors throughout the trial.

Participation is the key to ensuring these fantastic new classes remain on your campus group fitness timetable, so make sure you make the most of the trial by joining in – even bring a friend or two!

Monash Games – Faculty v Faculty – Department v Department

Held at the Clayton campus, Monash Games are an opportunity for staff and students across all Victorian campuses of the university to play modified sports in a fun and friendly environment over two days.

The Monash Games are now in it’s sixth year and offers a number of different sports and activities with an emphasis on getting involved and ‘having a go’. All skill levels are encouraged to take part from beginners to those that are advanced.

Monash Games present a great chance to represent your campus, meet new people and become involved in university life. If you are interested in participating, register online through our website!

Competition sports include; futsal, basketball, netball and volleyball. A staff only challenge is also available for those who cannot commit to the two days of competition.

Sport at Monash Calendar

Calender Don’t know when key events are? There will be no more excuses with the Sport at Monash calendar exclusive to Monash staff. Conveniently feeding times, dates, locations and web links to everything ‘sport at Monash’ directly into your Google calendar, the Sport at Monash calendar is perfect for fitting in a planned or spontaneous sport and activity into even the busiest schedule! To access the Sport at Monash calendar, login into the my.monash portal, select the Sport at Monash tick box and update your subscription. The Sport at Monash calendar will now appear overlaid on your personal Google calendar.

 

Fitness Connect

Fitness Connect is a service which allows users to find and workout with someone of a similar fitness level and ability in exercise and/or sport. Exercising with a friend makes working out more enjoyable with many studies indicating the benefits regarding motivation, support and exercise longevity. The service can be found through my.monash.portal

30 June is crunch time for health insurance

Take out BUPA hospital cover under the Monash University corporate health plan by 30th June and avoid the Government’s Lifetime Health Cover loading.^ If you’re over 31 the GovernBUPA_3_COL_TEMP_AWment’s Lifetime Health Cover loading could add an extra 2% on top of your standard premium for each year you delay taking out private hospital cover.^
