In the May edition:

What’s your real health age?

We all know our real age, but how many of us know how old we are on the inside? We’ve teamed up with BUPA to provide Monash staff and students access to an online Health Assessment Tool to tell us just that.

The online survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and looks at all areas of your personal health – from diet and exercise, to stress and lifestyle factors.

Once completed, you’ll get a personalised report outlining your health age (as opposed to your chronological age), and some handy tips to improve your overall health and wellbeing to reduce your health age. The information collected is confidential and can be reviewed at any time.  So take the time to find out your health age now!

New Vending machines on your campus!

Brand new vending machines offering more healthy options have been rolled out across our Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula and Parkville campuses.

Vendy, recently appointed as Monash’s new vending supplier, offer an extensive range of products with a focus on healthier drinks and snacks, like nuts, popcorn, crackers and cheese, muesli bars, sparkling and flavoured waters.

Vendy also promote new and innovative Australian-made products like Cobs popcorn, Rumbles nuggets, Blue Dinosaur bars, Nutty Squirrel trail mixes and Emma and Tom’s bars.

Traditional vending will still be available too, but Vendy hope to offer more variety for staff and students looking for a healthy snack option.

The new vending machines meet the Victorian Government’s Healthy Choices Guidelines (50% green, 30% amber and 20% red drinks and snacks).  Monash will now seek recognition from the Victorian Government’s workplace Achievement Program for our significant commitment to providing more healthy choices in vending for our staff and students.  Keep a look out for the shiny new automated machines and check out the range of options available.

Uni Mental Health and Wellbeing day

Monash’s first Uni Mental health and wellbeing day took place on Tuesday 2 May.  Close to 900 staff and students involved in face to face activities, workshops and seminars.  The Active Mental Health theme aimed to open up conversations about the relationship between mental and physical wellbeing, and there were quite a few exercise opportunities on offer – yoga, a netball tournament, the Menzies Climb etc.

‘’We had great traction with the ‘Step up for mental health Menzies climb’ video created by the Mental Health Champions.  It attracted a reach of over 40,000 people on Facebook!  With a community as large as Monash it’s fantastic to connect with those who are not on campus and reiterate we do place importance on staff wellbeing and we have services and programs to help” said Clare Swanson, Mental Health Programs Coordinator.

Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. This half day workshop teaches participants to recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving mental health support.

Next training sessions is Friday 2 June at Peninsula.  Register here
