Its a Wrap:  Global Walk/Run a Hit with Staff and Students

The sun was shining on Melbourne last week as hundreds of staff and students came together to walk or run around our campuses for the Global Walk/Run.

At Clayton, the event was kicked off by Provost and Senior Vice President Professor Marc Parlange, who congratulated the nearly 500 staff in attendance for getting involved in activities that support the health and wellbeing of the Monash community.

This year, the event was part of the Monash in Motion Festival which has seen the Monash Council and Monash University join forces to become one of only three municipalities worldwide to receive City in Motion Status from the International Federation of University Sport (FISU).

Counselor Josh Fergeus, a representative from the City of Monash, was on hand to welcome participants to the event, congratulating the University on its close collaboration with the Council on community building projects like this one.  He noted that activities like the Global Walk/Run provided yet another opportunity for the wider Monash community to come together to improve their health and wellbeing.

At the finish line, participants were treated to a healthy lunch and prize giveaways.

The event once again supported and raised funds for the great work done by the White Ribbon organisation, an organisation committed to preventing violence against women.

Changing the way we treat diabetes and its complications

Since the discovery of insulin over 90 years ago and a number of oral tablets after the second world war there was very little change in the treatment of type 2 diabetes till the last decade.  In the last 10 years there have been dramatic improvements in the way we treat type 2 diabetes also known as maturity onset diabetes, a condition that has become arguably the largest worldwide epidemic as the world has industrialised with increasing obesity and reduced exercise.
