Get 2018 off to a great start and “SWAP” into one of our many activities

Want to make a difference to your health in 2018? Why not get the year off to a good start by getting a few of your colleagues together and registering for one of the many wellbeing activities available.

We had a great year with our SWAP classes last year and to ensure we meet the increased demand for programs, we are now offering an extensive range of fitness classes like boxing, learn to swim, high intensity interval training, pilates, yoga and zumba and others..   All details regarding classes, costs and locations can be found here.

Don’t forget, if you would like to organise a SWAP class for your department at a time and venue that suits you, simply complete the form on our website and we’ll get back to you.

Note: Registrations on programs at Clayton campus will open on Thursday 1st of February

Host an ‘Afternoon Teal’ Party in February and Raise Money for Ovarian CancerAT

Why not bake your favourite cake, brew a pot of tea and host an ‘Afternoon Teal’ party to raise funds for a great cause! February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, aimed at raising awareness of the symptoms, risks and impacts of ovarian cancer. Your ‘Afternoon Teal’ party will be one of many aimed at raising $500,000 to support work in ovarian cancer awareness, advocacy and research. To register and plan your ‘Afternoon Teal’ click here.

 Responding to disclosures of sexual assault training

The newly established Respectful Communities Unit and Monash Counselling Services are inviting all staff and student leaders to attend a training session on responding to sexual assault disclosures.  The session will be facilitated by the South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA) and will provide staff and students with a greater understanding of how they can:

  • recognise why it may be difficult for survivors to come forward;
  • respond to a disclosure empathetically;
  • ensure an appropriate response that does not further traumatise or harm the survivor;
  • know their obligations around confidentiality; and
  • understand how to manage their own response to hearing disclosures.

Monash has committed to take action on all of the nine recommendations made in the Australian Human Rights Commission’s ‘Change the Course’ report on sexual assault and sexual harassment at Australian Universities. These training sessions are just one of the many actions we are taking to help ensure our campuses are communities of respect.

 World Cancer Day- 4th of February

World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer.  It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action. Why World Cancer Day is important

  • Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years)
  • World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds and in the world’s media

Commuting your way to health in 2018Sustainable Transport_V3

How do you travel to uni? Do you take the bus or the train? Perhaps you bike or walk. Whatever the case, your choice of transport could make a real difference to your health. According to a recent Melbourne study, your health is affected not just by how you commute, but from where. People who used public transport, or drove to the station or bus, they got about half an hour a day incidental exercise, whilst people who walked to the station or the bus, train, or tram, got about 41 minutes a day. Walkers and cyclists, averaged about 38 minutes a day. So next time you’re thinking about hopping in your car to get to work, why not walk, ride or take public transport and commute your way to a healthier lifestyle!  See our sustainable transport page for ideas.

Donate your old eye glasses to someone who needs themrotary eye glasses

Do you have old eye glasses sitting in your desk draw? Well why not donate them to someone who needs them? Wellbeing@Monash is now collecting used eye glasses for the Lions Recycle For Sight Program. Send your unwanted eye glasses via internal mail to Wellbeing@Monash – OHS, 1st Floor, 30 Research Way, Clayton.

Free Mindfulness for Wellbeing and Peak Performance online course

Learn mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and improve your wellbeing and work/study performance in this free online course. Research shows that when you’re not deliberately paying attention to something, your brain goes into default mode causing increased anxiety and poor communication. Mindfulness can help end this unproductive behaviour. In this online course, you’ll learn how to incorporate mindfulness practices into your life, to reduce stress and improve your personal and professional life.

 FreeFood as Medicine online course

This course introduces the concept of food as medicine. You will explore how food can be important both in preventative health and as an aid in the management of certain chronic diseases today, in the past and in the future. You will also learn about what’s in food that gives it the potential to improve our health and how to recognise which types of foods are essential for health and wellbeing, and how food can play an important role in treating/preventing disease.

Monash Sport News, Events and Offers

Equipment and Locker Upgrade at Monash Sport Clayton Fitness Centre

As part of our commitment to continued improvement, the recent closedown period saw a variety of upgrades/additions to the Clayton Fitness Centre. These improvements to the training space includes:

  • Lifting Platforms
  • Deadballs
  • Olympic Bars
  • Assessment Room Refurbishment
  • Wall repaint

Along with these equipment upgrades, we also renewed our lockers to ensure that our members have confidence that their belongings are safe during their time at Monash Sport. The new locks are now operated via a personal 4 digit pin code as opposed to the old key / coin system. Students and staff can also access the lockers with their student / staff card. Community members can use any card with an RFID chip (e.g. myki card).

We hope you enjoy these enhancements as we look forward to further improving our facility in 2018.

Monash University Club

The refurbished Monash Club is a vibrant and social place for staff to relax, meet, dine and/or work and has no membership fee.  The Club facilities include a licensed bar and lounge, private dining room, restaurant, meeting rooms, a business centre and outdoor  spaces.
Victa & Hoist manage the day-to-day operations of the Club and offer special events for staff throughout the year.

The Monash Club is located in building 50 on Clayton campus and is open for coffee from 7.30am, breakfast 8 – 11am and lunch 12 – 3pm.
