Keep stepping for the 10,000 Steps Challenge
More than 2400 Monash staff, students, family and friends have registered for the 10,000 Steps Challenge.
The 5 week Challenge will see participants walk a virtual walk visiting national parks around Victoria. Teams of up to 8 people will each aim to clock up at least 10,000 steps each day.
All participants are invited to a tree planting celebration event on Wednesday 23 November. Register online

Top 10 tips for keeping active during the 10,000 Steps Challenge
- Stand up at your desk when taking a phone call
- Pack a picnic or the cricket set and take your family to enjoy one of the many picturesque parks and gardens around Melbourne and Victoria
- Schedule a walking meeting
- Remove your bin from your desk so you have to walk to the next bin
- Stand and take a break from your computer every 30 minutes
- Download a free 7 day trial at Monash Sport
- Register your department for a SWAP program
- Eat your lunch away from your desk
- Get up off the couch and walk around the house during the tv ad breaks
- Enjoy the lunchtime sun with a stroll around campus, download campus walking maps
Monash winner at Australian HR Awards
The Wellbeing at Monash Program has been announced as the winner at the Australian HR Awards for ‘Best Health and Wellbeing Strategy’’ at a dinner on Friday 28 October at the Hilton Sydney Hotel.
The awards feature 19 categories for individuals, teams and organisations recognising achievements in people management and leadership.
The Wellbeing at Monash Program was selected as the winner from 5 finalists. The award recognises excellence in the area of corporate health and wellbeing. The other 4 finalists were Bupa (HBA), Clayton Utz Lawyers, Ramsay Health Care and Sensis.
Bryley Sadler, Wellbeing at Monash Coordinator thanks all Monash staff who have contributed to and participated in the Wellbeing at Monash program.
‘The Monash award submission has been many years in the making and is a testament to the commitment the Occ Health team and OHS branch has placed on delivering a high quality, beneficial, sustainable wellbeing program in collaboration with many supporters including Monash Sport, Health & Wellbeing, HR and tOES.’ Bryley said.

Mental health resources
With one in five Australians experiencing some form of mental illness, Monash a great range of mental health resources for staff. Services and programs include:
- Counselling service: free, professional and confidential service. Individual appointments and group programs
- Employee Assistance Program: external, confidential counselling service available free-of-charge to all University employees and their immediate family members.
- Mental Health First Aid training: learn how to help someone with a mental health problem before professional help is sought
- Mindfulness meditation: free weekly classes. Beginners welcome
Monash staff walk their way to positive mental health
400 Monash staff took a step toward better health by participating in the Monash GLOBAL walk/run on Wednesday 12 October.
Delivered in conjunction with Wellbeing at Monash, Monash Sport and Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, the fourth bi-annual GLOBAL walk/run coincided with Mental Health Week – aiming to increase the awareness and knowledge of mental health. Staff participated in the on campus GLOBAL 3km walk or 5km run.
More than $600 was donated by participants for MAPrc.
Lunchtime mindfulness lecture by Dr Craig Hassed
Dr Craig Hassed recently delivered a mindfulness lecture with more than 200 staff attending.
This lecture explored the importance of mindfulness with its applications in healthcare and psychotherapy. A picture is evolving that the training of attention is a generic skill that has a wide variety of particular applications from the most profound to the most mundane. Such applications include the enhancement of wellbeing, the management of depression and stress, dealing with chronic pain, enhancing performance, and leadership training.

Pilates, boxing, zumba and yoga classes for your team
EResearch, HR, Facilities & Services, Education, ITS, OHS, the Alfred, Engineering and Medicine have all registered for the Staff Wellbeing & Activity Program. SWAP has been designed to bring on campus activity to your office! With 30 or 60 minute yoga, zumba, boxing and pilates classes from just $8 per person, get your colleagues together and organise a class at a time that suits you!

Weight Watchers at Work Program
Clayton, Caulfield, Gippsland and Peninsula staff the opportunity to enrol in a new Weight Watchers Program. With the convenience of weekly meetings on campus*, you’ll get the guidance that you need to succeed and stay on track to achieve your weight loss and lifestyle goals.
About the program: The program consists of one weekly lunchtime meeting for 13 weeks
Cost: $233.35 for 13 week program (payment must be made upfront by cash or card at the first meeting). Some private health insurance providers provide a partial refund.
How to register: Send your interest to join a program to wellbeing@monash.edu with WW and your campus in the subject line.
Online health programs
Access a vast library of recipes; exercise descriptions; and articles across a broad range of fitness, nutrition and health topics, the Wellbeing programs are designed to guide you to your health goals. Online modules are made available to you over the course of 8 to 26 weeks, depending on the program.

Following the results of the Parkville health checks, Monash Sport are now offering free weekly classes. This is a great opportunity for Parkville staff to get out of the office and get active!

Mindfulness meditation: Wednesdays 12-12.30pm, pharmaceutics meeting room

Fitness Connect provides you the service of finding a staff or student to join your exercise routine.
Many studies have revealed that exercising together provide benefits such as extra motivation, socialisation, structure, support and a higher chance of staying on the pathway of fitness. Thus, Fitness Connect acts as a platform where you can find that extra player for your sports team, grow your sports club or simply to find a friend in fitness.
This service is also FREE for all Monash students and staff.

TeamMONASH to change the face of men’s health
Movember- the month formerly known as November will see the return of ‘Moustache Season’ across Monash University and universities nationally.
Movember is a month-long celebration of the moustache supporting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression. Since 2003, Movember has achieved great results by working alongside The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCFA) and beyondblue: the national depression initiative.
TeamMONASH is an initiative run by Monash University students completing their internships with Monash Sport. And is the official Monash University team as part of the Movember National Uni Challenge.
Monash University staff, students, alumni and members are invited to help this great cause by joining the TeamMONASH, in the National Uni Challenge Network, and embrace all the things Mo for the month of Movember.
By participating in the Uni Challenge Network, TeamMONASH Mo Bros, supported by their Mo Sistas can compare moustaches and fundraising efforts with other universities across Australia.
There are prizes and awards on offer as part of the National Uni Challenge including:
- Master of Moustachery
- Bachelor of Mo Cultivation and Appreciation
- Albert Einstein Award
- Associate Degree and Advanced Diploma in Mo-raising

Chancellor’s Cup Golf Day
The Chancellor’s Cup Golf Day is a fundraising opportunity for Monash University affiliated sporting clubs across all campuses. It is ideal for Monash University alumni and supporters to connect with each other in a relaxed and informal setting, as well as, to raise the much needed funds for ongoing initiatives.
The four person Ambrose format will provide the basis for a great day of golf on one of Melbourne’s most prestigious courses at the Spring Valley Golf Club. Throughout the day various competitions will be held including, longest drive 7th & 18th holes and nearest the pin 3rd & 10th holes.
The event will be held on Friday 18 November, 2011. A light lunch will also be provided on arrival, with food and beverage snacks supplied to participants during the round from a mobile refreshment cart. The event will finish with an informal gourmet BBQ, presentations to the winners and a thank you to all participants for their support.
Team and individual registrations are now open!! You can choose to register online via credit card payment, or you may also complete the registration form and return to Monash Sport by mail.
