Less salt = lower blood pressure = less risk of stroke
Did you know about 75% of the salt we eat is hidden in processed foods?
When buying foods look for salt content with 0.3g or less per 100g. High salt content is more than 1.5g per 100g.
Salt can increase blood pressure and cause stroke, heart failure and heart attack. There is also increasing evidence of a link between high salt intake and stomach cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, kidney stones and kidney disease
You can reduce your salt intake by using healthier options that are lower in salt. Try to:
– Cook vegetables and carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta, without adding salt
– If the recipe says to ‘season to taste’ or ‘add salt’, just leave out the salt
– Leave the salt shaker in the kitchen cupboard, not on the dining table
– Try unsalted savory snacks, eg. unsalted popcorn, rice cakes, unsalted nuts and seeds.
– Remember to taste your food before adding salt
