Monash University named world’s healthiest workplaceglobalhealthyworkplaceawards3

Monash University has won the 2016 Global Healthy Workplace Award in recognition of its healthy workplace programs, and contribution to workplace health, in the large employer category.

The awards ceremony held in Washington DC, recognised those workplaces that have made the biggest impact on the health and wellbeing of their workforce. Monash University was shortlisted as one of three finalists in the large employer category alongside Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, Brazil and Johnson & Johnson, Brazil.  Applications were reviewed against the World Health Organisation (WHO) healthy workplace framework and model for action.

Speaking at the conference, Dr Ashton the University’s Chief Medical Officer, said that “The breadth and diversity of Monash’s Wellbeing programs, which cover the four pillars of physical health, mental health, nutrition and general health, were recognised as world leading.”

Major successes under the Wellbeing at Monash program include: the 10,000 Steps Challenge; targeted Staff Wellbeing Activity Programs (SWAP) that provide tailored physical activity classes; health risk reduction programs for cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, nutrition and stress; education programs for mental health and mindfulness; and the introduction of a smoke-free University in 2016, with fully funded quit support programs for both staff and students. “The success of these programs could not have been achieved without the support of our key stakeholders, Monash Sport, Team Monash and Counselling, together with our many wellbeing champions” said Dr Ashton.

Learn how to reduce your risk of developing diabetesapple

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease with nearly 1,000,000 Australians currently diagnosed and 280 Australians developing diabetes each day. The good news is that up to 60% of cases can be prevented. You can learn how to reduce your chance of developing type 2 diabetes, as well as heart disease and stroke, by attending an information session delivered by Diabetes Victoria, which will cover topics such as:

  • What is diabetes?
  • Symptoms and complications of diabetes
  • Risk factors linked to type 2 diabetes
  • How to prevent type 2 diabetes

If you would like to attend one of our upcoming sessions, please click below to register.

All who attend will also have the opportunity to complete the AUSDRISK tool to determine their risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.  All high risk, eligible employees will then be offered the opportunity to participate in a Divisional Life! program where professionals will provide you with individual attention and learn about you and your lifestyle. Inquiries can be forwarded to wellbeing@monash.edu

The Science of Meditation and Mindfulnessmental health mindfulness-exercises-02

Mindfulness is being fully engaged in each moment. It has benefits for wellbeing, productivity and relationships, as science journalist Graham Phillips experienced in this ABC Catalyst especial. Taught by Dr Richard Chambers, Campus Community, who is leading a university-wide mindfulness initiative at Monash University, alongside Craig Hassed, Graham experienced an obvious improvement to his wellbeing as well as reaction time and memory. When his brain was imaged (which also happened at Monash), there was significant growth in key areas for learning and wellbeing.
Monash offers a range of free mindfulness programs for staff and students (perhaps include a link here to http://www.monash.edu/health/mindfulness)
