Registrations for the 2016 Monash 10,000 Steps Challenge: ‘Around the World in 75 Days’ are now open, and will close on 31 August 2016. This year the challenge is a little different, and will run for 10 weeks commencing on 8 September.
The 2016 challenge will be facilitated by Stepathlon, a year-long employee wellness program focused on achieving better physical and mental health through fun, engaging and sustainable activities.
In this year’s program, participants will form teams of five (5), including team captain (instead of teams of eight as in previous years). There are also some great new features including the ability to:
- Access a great range of additional motivational and engagement tools such as contests, challenges, quizzes, resources etc.
- Directly sync from devices like Fitbit, Garmin, Google Fit, Moves, etc,
- Convert up to 12 activities including swimming, cycling, weights and yoga etc
- Win some great prizes by earning step points when filling in daily quizzes
- Enter weekly competitions and go into the draw to win some great prizes
- Continue to track your steps until August 2017 to challenge yourself
The challenge is open to all Monash University staff, students, family and friends at the subsidised cost of $15 per person which includes entry into the challenge, access to a hub of resources and advice, and the opportunity to win prizes through weekly competitions. A new BUDD-E pedometer will also be available if requested during team registration.
Many University faculties and divisions are supporting the program by subsidising the cost of their staff registration fees. Remember to talk to your manager/director before registering your team to find out if there is an allocated cost centre/fund for you to use.

R U OK? Day- September 8th
R U OK?Day is a national day of action and a reminder to regularly check in with family, friends and workmates. This year, we’re encouraging everyone to reconnect with someone they’ve lost touch with and to make more time for the people who matter to them. Why? Because quality time with those we care about makes it easier to start a meaningful conversation.
We encourage staff and student groups to promote the day by;
Getting a group together and host an activity
This could be a BBQ, a letter writing table, a team sport – anything that brings your group together to provide time to connect with each other.
Jump on the Monash R U OK? Day website and let us know what you are up to. (see Plan your event section). We have a limited amount of merchandise which can only be given to events we know about.
Promote your event
Posters, flyers and plasma screens available for download from the Monash R U OK? Day website (see Promote your event). Uses whatever forms of communication work for your group ie. Social media, newsletters etc
Merchandise
A small starter pack will be allocated to groups that register their event on our website.
For Monash resources and information about our events see monash.edu/ruokday or contact Clare Swanson (clare.swanson@monash.edu)

Facing your fears – a motivational story
When Susan Berg was 15 years old she encountered something many of us will never have to go through, losing her family in one tragic accident. While out on a boat trip with her parents and brother their boat suddenly sank. Susan, desperate and cold, swam ahead in the darkness to try and find help for her and her family. After 4 hours of struggling through rough seas in the dark Susan finally made it ashore. Her family tragically did not.
Since that boating accident that claimed her family’s lives 30 years ago Susan has fiercely avoided both swimming and open water. But now, as part of her journey of self-healing, Susan is ready to take on her fears by swimming the world’s largest open water event- the Lorne Pier to Pub- in January 2017. click here
