Free Health Checks on the way
Monash will be offering free health checks for staff commencing mid August.
The free 20-minute health checks will be run at multiple Monash campuses and sites, and will include:
- A check of your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose and waist circumference all measured by a health professional.
- An assessment of your type 2 diabetes risk, cardiovascular disease risk, and modifiable risk factors (smoking and exercise)
- Individual results card, results consultation and recommendation.
Further information will be distributed by Faculties and Departments shortly.
Time to dust off your runners… 10,000 Steps Challenge is coming soon
It’s back again for another year! We’re inviting you to get a team of five together and make every step count. And don’t worry, if you don’t have a team but would love to join the challenge, we can find one for you!
Starting on 1st October this year’s challenge will take you on a 50-day virtual tour of the globe. You’ll find out where soon!
Registrations will open the week of the 20th of August, so start choosing your team members now. Your faculty or division will be sending out information in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out in your inbox for the call to register. And, don’t forget to also check whether your area is funding staff participation.

Target 2025 Countdown to Tobacco Free Victoria
Monash University signs up to “Target 2025 Countdown to tobacco free Victoria” joining over 24 leading health and community groups who have united to reduce Victoria’s smoking rate. Today’s launch at the Cancer Council led by Todd Harper CEO Vic Health reminds us of the importance of healthy smoke free environments as well as the high risk of premature death, chronic disease and disability for smokers who continue to smoke. Monash supports its staff and students who wish to quit the habit through fully funded QUIT programs. Information is available at the wellbeing website.
Do you know if you’re at high risk of Diabetes?
- Session 1: What is diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Why am I at risk?
- Session 2: Nutrition – fat, fibre, salt, sugar, alcohol, food label reading (this session is run by a dietitian).
- Session 3: Physical activity – how to get started, what intensity should I be working at, strength training and how to sit less (this session is run by an exercise physiologist or physiotherapist).
- Session 4: Managing lapses, social eating, mindful eating, how to reduce stress, relaxation, sleep and social support.
- Session 5: Recap and reflect: healthy living goals, managing lapses, setting goals for the future.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) refresher course
This is a five hour face-to-face course that allows people who have previously completed the two-day Mental Health First Aid course to refresh their knowledge and skills and extend their accreditation for a further three years.
Clayton – Friday 10 August, 10am – 3pm

Dental Health Week- 6th of August-12th of August
Dental Health Week will run from 6 th of August and this year’s focus is “Watch Your Mouth”. Its aim is to educate about the importance of maintaining overall good oral health.
Monash University Dental Clinic is located at the Clayton campus centre inside the UHS. New patients seen during dental health week will receive a free dental show bag.

Doug Ellis Main Pool Maintenance Project
To enhance your experience at Monash Sport, the Doug Ellis pool is undergoing an essential maintenance project. The Main Pool (including the Leisure Pool) will be closed over a period of approximately 5 months.
During this period, there will be some periods of revised access to the Variable Pool and the Sauna, Spa and Steam room.

Monash Staff Games – 19 & 20 July, 2018
Held at Clayton Campus, the Monash Staff Games were an opportunity for staff across all Victorian campuses of the University to play modified sports in a fun and friendly environment.
The 2018 Monash Staff Games offered a number of different sports and activities with an emphasis on getting involved and ‘having a go’.
