In the June edition:

What’s your real health age this year?

We all know our real age, but how many of us know how old we are on the inside? We’ve teamed up with BUPA to provide Monash staff and students access to an online Health Assessment Tool to tell us just that.  If you took the assessment last year, why not see how your health might have improved this year?

The online survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and looks at all areas of your personal health – from diet and exercise, to stress and lifestyle factors.

Once completed, you’ll get your own personalised report outlining your health age (as opposed to your chronological age), and some handy tips to improve your overall health and wellbeing to reduce your health age. The information collected is confidential and can be reviewed at any time.  So take the time to find out your health age now!

Poor fitness linked to higher risk of dementia

New evidence is showing the close correlation between exercise and brain health and cognitive function. White matter is made up of bundles of nerve fibres that act like information highways, allowing parts of the brain to “talk” to each other.

The research team took 81 people – 26 with normal brain function and 55 with mild cognitive impairment – and measured fitness using a formula called maximal oxygen uptake. White matter was tested with brain imaging. Tests were also done for memory and cognitive function. They found that people with higher maximal oxygen uptake had better white matter integrity and cognitive function.

Dr Shantel Duffy, a postdoctoral fellow specialising in dementia research at the University of Sydney, said the finding added to the growing body of evidence confirming the relationship between exercise and brain health. More details on the research findings can be found here

If you want to start getting fit at work, join one of the many programs that are available at your campus. Details on programs can be found on the health and wellbeing website.
