Trades and Services agreement heard today

Monday, December 15th, 2003

The university’s application for certification of the proposed Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Trades and Services Staff – Building and Metal Trades Staff and Grounds and Gardening Staff) 2003 was heard today before Deputy President Ives of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

The other parties to the Agreement, the CEPU (Electrical and Plumbing Divisions) and the CFMEU, supported the university’s application for certification. The NTEU is not a party to the Agreement but was granted leave to intervene in proceedings.

The NTEU raised no issue regarding the substance of the Agreement. Instead, the NTEU opposed the application for certification on purely technical grounds.

After hearing the submissions of the parties, Deputy President Ives reserved his decision and adjourned the matter to a date to be fixed. Until the university’s application is approved and the proposed Agreement is certified, none of its provisions are operative. This includes the provisions for a salary increase in March 2004 as well as the increases in the fortnightly allowances of licensed Electricians and registered Plumbers. In the meantime, the provisions of the current Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Trades and Services Staff – Building and Metal Trades Staff and Grounds and Gardening Staff) 2000 will continue to apply.

Should Trades and Services staff require any further information or assistance in the interim, please contact Mr Greg Crundall, Principal Employee Relations Officer on extension 56863 or via e-mail on gregory.crundall@adm.monash.edu.au.
