3. 2012 Law School Ambassador Program Presents – Speakers Forum: Defended to the End
This event will focus on why it is important to ensure all individuals are defended, regardless of their actions and their standing in public opinion. The justice system is founded upon the rule of law. This can be quickly eroded through show trials or trials perceived as such. Adequate and impassioned defence and representation of unpopular minorities is imperative to maintain the rule of law over public or political priorities

Public Lecture – All Welcome
The power of strategic nonviolent action—which has previously brought down autocratic regimes from the Philippines to Poland and from Chile to Serbia—has made its mark on the Middle East during the past sixteen months, challenging the legitimacy of both pro-Western and anti-Western regimes as well as military occupations in the West Bank and Western Sahara. Indeed, it has been millions of ordinary Arabs—men and women, Muslim and Christian, poor and middle class, young and old—who have challenged the assumptions of both Islamist extremists and Western imperialists on how change can take place as a result of their quest for political freedom and social justice. Professor Zunes, an authority on both Middle Eastern politics and civil insurrections, will examine the recent and ongoing struggles in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain, Syria, Western Sahara and elsewhere, their implications for Western powers, and the prospects for democracy.
