1. 19th Lucinda Lecture -”Section 80 – The Great Constitutional Tautology”

Presented by: The Hon. Justice Virginia Bell AC, The High Court of Australia

Virginia Margaret Bell AC was appointed to the High Court in February 2009. At the time of her appointment she was a judge of the New South Wales Court of Appeal. She graduated from the University of Sydney as a Bachelor of Laws in 1976. After seven years as a solicitor with the Redfern Legal Centre, she was admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1984 and was appointed a Senior Counsel in 1997. Justice Bell practised as a public defender between 1986 and 1989 before returning to the private Bar. Between 1994 and 1997 she was a counsel assisting the Royal Commission into the New South Wales Police Service. Justice Bell was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in March 1999. She served as president of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration from 2006 to 2008.

3. Information Session – Pathways to Oxford and Cambridge

We will be holding an information session about pathways from Monash law to further study at Oxford and Cambridge.

The session will provide guidance, tips and insights and highlight important considerations in planning for further study at Oxford or Cambridge.

Speakers will include the Dean of law – Professor Bryan Horrigan (PhD, Oxford – Rhodes Scholar), Law Lecturer Colin Campbell (LLM and PhD, Cambridge), and recent Monash law, Oxford or Cambridge graduates.

The session will be held twice at different locations:

•1pm – 2pm – Tuesday 22 October, L2, Building 12, Clayton Campus
•5:30pm – 6:30pm – Tuesday 29 October, Seminar Room 3, MULC, Melbourne city

At the session to be held on 22 October, Associate Professor Moira Paterson, Director of Graduate Studies, will also be speaking about options for Post Graduate studies at Monash University.

Public forum – All welcome

Marriage Equality is now recognised in more than a dozen countries around the world, including our neighbour New Zealand, however it remains unrecognised in Australia. In the aftermath of the federal election, how should supporters proceed? Can states fill the breach if the federal government won’t step in? Come and listen to these prominent supporters of marriage equality as they discuss the future of equal love in Australia.
