1. 20th Lucinda Lecture – Legislative Intention – Clayton Campus
Presented by: The Honourable Justice Stephen Gageler, the High Court of Australia
Stephen John Gageler was appointed to the High Court in October 2012. At the time of his appointment he was Solicitor-General of Australia. He is a graduate of the Australian National University and has post-graduate qualifications from Harvard University. He was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1989 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000. Before his appointment as Solicitor-General in 2008, he practised as a barrister extensively throughout Australia, principally in constitutional law, administrative law and commercial law.

2. Castan Centre Dinner 2014
The Castan Centre for Human Rights law invites you to our Biennial Human Rights gala dinner. The dinner is a fundraiser for the Castan Centre’s many policy, public education and student programs. We hope you can join us for our celebratory evening at Albert Park.

Jon Stanhope, Administrator of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (2012 -2014), Chief Minister of the ACT (2001 – 2011)
Since 2012 Mr Stanhope has been responsible for both the Cocos (Keeling) islands and Christmas Island, the site of many asylum seeker arrivals and a large detention centre
In 2004, during his time as Chief Minister of the ACT, Jon Stanhope introduced a Human Rights Act, which was the first legislation of its kind on human rights in Australia.

4. IACP Collaborative Practice Event: What Does it Mean to be a „we‟ in the Collaborative Process
This 2-day workshop will clarify the expectations each professional brings to the table regarding: the roles we play, how we each relate to the clients, how responsibility for the client and for managing the expectations and timing of the process is shared within the Team, as well as how and when the law is introduced into the conversation. We will explore the hierarchies and tensions which inevitably show up in our work, created in part, by the pressure of being part of a ‘collaborative community.’
Places for this event are very limited so register now to avoid disappointment.

5. LSS Cabaret Night
The LSS in conjunction with the legal production group Bottled Snail will be hosting a charity cabaret night. The show is titled ‘The Secret Life of a Lawyer’ and uses song, comedy and theatre to present a light-hearted look at the idiosyncrasies of life in the legal community. All the while, the show will promote a powerful message about looking out for the wellbeing of yourself and others. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation, a charitable organisation set up to raise the profile of depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses within the legal fraternity.

6. MUNash 2014
Are you interested in international affairs, public speaking, and negotiating? Looking for something fun to do in your mid-semester break? Then you should participate in MUNash: Monash University Model United Nations Conference.
MUNash will run from Monday 29 September until Wednesday 1 October (during the mid-semester break) at the Caulfield campus, and is organised by the Monash International Affairs Society and Orion College.
A Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In a Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organisation’s agenda. While playing their roles as ambassadors, student “delegates” make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN rules of procedure – all in the interest of mobilising international cooperation to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.
This year, there are five different committees available.
Committees which are open to all participants (no experience or special knowledge required):
- Second General Assembly (economic and financial)
- Sixth General Assembly (legal)
- Human Rights Council
Committees which are only open to participants with special experience:
- Security Council (MUN experience required)
- International Criminal Court (MUN or mooting experience required)
Register now to participate:
Your ticket includes participation in the conference, entry into the night time events, and morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on all three days. You will have ample opportunity to mingle and network with delegates from all committees.
Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email within a few days from the Director of Delegate Affairs with further details.

7. R U OK? Day BBQ
Law Students are invited to attend the 2014 RU OK? Day BBQ on Thursday 11 September at 12 Noon outside the Law faculty. Please wear something yellow to support this Campus wide awareness day of mental health and wellbeing.
The RUOK Day Bus touring from Darwin is stopping at Monash Clayton on the morning of Monday 8 September outside Robert Blackwood Hall if you are around first thing, drop by and check out the pop up.
