1. VCAT Self Help Centre Clinic

VCAT and Monash University Faculty of Law have entered into a joint venture to set up a Self Help Centre at VCAT for 12 months on a pilot basis, with the intention that the Centre will continue beyond the pilot.

Applications are now open to enrol in the new VCAT Self Help Centre Clinic (LAW4803) and can be downloaded from the clinical legal education website.

2. 2015 Harold Ford Memorial Lecture

Melbourne Law School is pleased to invite you to the 2015 Harold Ford Memorial Lecture.

The speaker is The Honourable Chief Justice Robert French AC, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, who will speak on “Trusts and Statutes”.

3. Company Law in Rome, Italy

LUISS Summer School on European & Comparative Company Law: Capital Markets in Rome, Italy

In cooperation with Leiden University under the aegis of the Centre for European Company Law (CECL). This course is designed as an add-on to the education of law students as well as graduates with an interest in company law.  It will allow participants to prepare for or complement a graduate degree in business law by gaining an in-depth exposure to the theory and practice of company law in Europe and acquiring the tools for dealing with cross-border transactions involving listed companies.

4. VADR CPD Event: Early Neutral Evaluation

You are cordially invited to a VADR CPD presentation on Tuesday, 5 May 2015, when Chief Magistrate of Victoria, Peter Lauritsen will speak on the Early Neutral Evaluation Program. The program was introduced into the Magistrates’ Court, Victoria with effect from 1 July 2012 after a 2010 pilot. In Early Neutral Evaluation, parties present their cases by way of submission on the facts and law to an evaluator, who provides them with a non-binding, confidential evaluation of their dispute.  The Chief Magistrate will discuss how the process operates, in what circumstances it is most effective and the success of the programme generally.

Peter Lauritsen became the Chief Magistrate of Victoria on 29 November 2012 after being first being appointed as a magistrate in 1989, and Deputy Chief Magistrate in 2003. Between 1987 and 1989, he was a magistrate for the Northern Territory. During his career, Mr Lauritsen has taken on a range of responsibilities in relation to the management and operation of various Courts and Tribunals, and chaired committees such as the Civil Rules Committee and the Court’s Dispute Resolution Committee.  Externally, he has represented the Court on numerous committees, bodies, boards and advisory groups including the Council of Legal Education, the Courts’ Library Committee, and the Judicial Officer’s Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Committee.

5. Mental Health Programs

A range of upcoming Mental Health Programs are available for Monash staff and students. The more popular programs include but are not limited to, health awareness, stress release, first aid training and meditation sessions.

Most of these programs are free!

6. Peer Support – English Program

Peer Support is an English Program operated by the MSA and CCD where trained students (facilitators) are able to assist students with English language in their assignments.

  • The program runs 20 minute drop in, one-one sessions for students who would like extra help.
  • The service is available from Week 3-Week 12 from Tuesday-Thursday at 11am-2pm each day.
  • The service operates in the John Medley Library in the Campus Centre.
