1. Special General Meeting + Meet & Greet

On Monday 21 March, the Monash LSS will be holding a Special General Meeting to discuss our financial reports from financial year 2015.

Following this, a meet and greet will be held to allow our newer members to get to know their committee and ask questions. Pizza will be provided!

Where: Menzies Building, H6 Theatre, Monash Clayton Campus

2. The L Card

You may be wondering what the new card you received with your membership keyring is, and it is an exciting new initiative with all Victorian law students’ societies to create one discount card to be used across Melbourne.

On Clayton campus, the card is accepted at Artichoke & Whitebait and Taste Baguette for a 10% discount.

LSS Careers Notices

1. What is Consulting?

The “What is Consulting Workshop” is an annual event aimed at providing an opportunity for students to learn about the management consulting profession from an industry expert.

The workshop is extremely relevant to law students, who are increasingly viewing management consulting as an alternative career path, due to its emphasis on analytical and problem solving skills.

Date: Thursday 24 March

Time: 12.00pm – 1.00pm

Venue: Menzies Building, H1 Theatre, Monash Clayton Campus

2. Paralegal – Family Law

A family lawyer in Ballarat is currently seeking a paralegal to work two days per week for a period of at least six months.

The ideal applicant will have an interest in family law and have completed at least two years of their law degree.

The position is paid and days are negotiable.

3. Kick Start Your Careers Seminar (featuring Allens)

In conjunction with Allens, the Careers portfolio will be hosting the Kick Start Your Career seminar in Week 3.

If you’re just starting your law degree or simply looking for more information about career-building activities, come down to the ‘Kick Start Your Careers’ Seminar to see what opportunities you can get involved in throughout your degree to help maximise your skills and experience.

Speakers will include Allens, LIV Young Lawyers, Monash Oakleigh Legal Service, Monash Careers Connect and student participants!

Date: Tuesday 15 March 2016

Time: 1.00 – 2.00pm

Venue: C1, 25 Exhibition Walk (Building 63 – the IT and Engineering building past Campus Centre near the new Residential Halls), Clayton Campus

This event is free.

4. Bird & Bird ‘GC for a day’

International law firm Bird & Bird are launching a new competition for Australian law students to be shadow a General Counsel for a day.

The prize includes a day shadowing a top GC, lunch with the GC, one on one mentoring session with an Associate, return flights to Sydney and one night’s accommodation.

Entries close Wednesday 16 March 2016.

To enter you must submit a 90-second video answering the following question:

  • “What do you envisage as the greatest opportunity for a GC of the future?”

5. Linklaters Roadshow

Linklaters will be running a Roadshow in Melbourne for penultimate year students.

It’s an excellent opportunity for students to find out more about the alliance and the clerkship programs.

Social Justice & Equity

1. Seminar Series

The Monash Law Student’s Society invites you to discover how to put your degree towards helping other people!

In the first of six seminars your LSS will be running in 2016, we have gathered a group of individuals to fill you in on how to make the most of the opportunities presented to you.

If you feel passionately about social justice and want to learn more about how to pursue your passions during your time at Monash, this seminar will provide you with information on pathways, experiences, and volunteering options that a Monash Law degree can present to you.

Speakers include:

  • Jacqueline Weinberg, Lecturer and Clinical Supervisor at the Monash Oakleigh Legal Service
  • Marius Smith, Centre Manager of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at Monash
  • Jessica Steele, President of the Progressive Law Network
  • Members of the LSS Social Justice & Equity team

You’ll hear about the Women in Law Breakfast, Social Justice Guide, Just Leadership Program and more.

The JD LSS office hours are as follows:

Monday: 12.00 – 5.00pm

Tuesday: 1.00 – 2.00pm

Wednesday: 12.00 – 5.00pm

Thursday: 11.00 – 3.00pm

During these times memberships and event tickets can be purchased.
