Social Justice & Equity

1. Seminar Series: Domestic Violence and the Law

Domestic violence features heavily in the media every week, with at least 1 in 3 women across the world facing domestic violence in their lifetime.

However, many of us do not understand what domestic violence is in a legal context. What is family violence? How does the law operate to prevent it? What can we do as lawyers to help victims of abuse?

The LSS has organised an informative seminar to educate you of these matters.

Date: Tuesday 5 April 2016

Time: 1.00pm

Location: E6, 23 College Walk (Building 60 – Engineering), Monash Clayton Campus

2. Victorian Women Lawyers event

VWL will be presenting a panel discussion with Maurice Blackburn on legal responses to non-consensual distribution of private sexual material.

This is an issue that disproportionately affects women, and which many of us have only recently begun to understand as an emerging form of family violence and sexual assault.

Proposed reforms to the law intend to make it unlawful to share, or threaten to share, private sexual material.

Our speakers will discuss such reforms and invite you to consider legal amendments.

Date: Wednesday 6 April 2016

Time: 5.30pm registration for a 6.00pm start

Location: Maurice Blackburn, Level 10, 456 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
