1. Sir John Monash Medal – nominations closing soon

Each year, the Faculty of Law awards the Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement.
The Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a student who:
  • has completed the academic requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws and is eligible to graduate;
  • is judged to have an excellent academic record; and
  • has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing the University’s goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Nominations for the Sir John Monash medal close Friday 22 February 2019.

A nomination can be made by the student, a fellow student, and any Monash staff member or any member of the community by completing the nomination form.

All nominations must include a letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination and a statement from the nominee addressing how he/she meets each of the eligibility criteria. Please also provide any supporting information which could be of use to the selection committee and permission from the student to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee.

Please submit your completed nomination form and any supporting documentation to the Faculty of Law Student Services Manager via the online submission form by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday 22 February 2019.

2. Volunteer Opportunities at Monash Law Clinics –Clayton

The following volunteer opportunities are available in 2019 at Monash Law Clinics –Clayton for LLB & JD Monash Law Students.

Wednesday Night Advice Only Service

Applications for the Wednesday Night General Advice Session at Monash Law Clinic will open at 9:30am 4 March 2019 and close 6pm 11 March 2019. Please note that late applications will not be accepted.

You are applying to be part of the Wednesday night volunteer team, which provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of legal problems.

Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm.

Orientation will be held on Wednesday 10 April 2019 at 6pm

Sessions will commence on 17 April 2019

Tuesday Night Family Law

The Tuesday Night Family Law Advice Service handles matters relating to Children, Divorce and Intervention Orders.

Students are rostered to volunteers on a Tuesday night on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm.

Applications for Tuesday Night Family Advice Session at Monash Law Clinic will open 9:30am 4 March 2019 and close 6pm 11 March 2019

Orientation will be held on Wednesday 10 April 2019 at 6pm

Sessions will commence on Tuesday 9 April 2019

3. Attend a UN delegation in New York

UNCCA invites Australian Law student to apply to participate in the UNLAWS Scheme.

UNCCA (UNCITRAL National Coordination Committee for Australia) has established a scheme for Australian law students to attend UNCITRAL Working Group meetings in New York (UN Headquarters) in 2019 as part of a delegation with Australian UNCCA Expert members.

The aim of the UNLAWS Scheme is to increase awareness of the work of UNCITRAL and to provide students with a unique opportunity to participate in the consideration and formulation of future harmonised legal texts in relation to trade law.  Each Working Group sessions typically last of one week.
