Monash R U OK Day? Thursday 12th September, every conversation counts

Monash is proud to be a program partner of 2013 R U OK? Day. R U OK? Day is a national day of action that reminds us that every person and every conversation counts. Building a caring and suicide alert community is everybody’s business. We can all have bad days but when baRUOK-Day-Banner1d days become months or years, some can lose hope.

  • On average, more than 2,300 Australians suicide each year (ABS 2012)
  • An estimated 65,000 people attempt suicide each year (Lifeline)
  • Suicide is the biggest killer of Australians aged 15 to 34 years (ABS 2012)

Worrying statistics, aren’t they? This is why Monash has a university-wide mental health strategy for our staff and students. An important part of this strategy is education, mental health promotion and early intervention.

10,000 Steps Challenge, registrations open 16th September

The 10,000 Steps Challenge is coming to Monash, registrations open from 16th Septeapplember!

The 4 week Challenge is open to all staff, students, friends and family and commences on Monday, 14 October and will see participants walk 1164km’s in a virtual walk around Tasmania.

Teams of up to 8 people will each aim to clock up at least 10,000 steps each day. There are great events happening at each campus and prizes for teams and individuals to win!

Participants will not only measure the number of steps they take each day using pedometers, but also experience the many benefits that physical activity has on mental health.

With one in five Australians experiencing some form of mental illness, Monash Mental Health Week, from 7 to 11 October, aims to raise awareness of the importance of mental health at Monash through a great variety of events across each campus.

The eighth bi-annual GLOBAL walk/run coincides with Mental Health Week – aiming to increase the awareness and knowledge of mental health at Monash.

Healthy cooking demonstrations: Learn to create simple, healthy and delicious meals!

Wellbeing at Monash are proud trial a staff cooking demonstration that will focus on healthy eating.

The demonstration will be facilitated by Dr Ricardo Costa, a registered Monash dietitian and nutritionist from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, who will inspire you make healthier eating choices and teach you skills to create simple, healthy meals.

Essence of health 5 week programs

ESSENCE Program Image (v1)

The Essence of Health is a model for enhancing wellbeing and sustainable performance as well as the prevention and management of chronic illness.  

Essence is an acronym standing for Education, Stress management, Spirituality, Exercise, Nutrition, Connectedness and Environment and is a comprehensive lifestyle program underpinned by enabling strategies such as mindfulness, enhancing motivation, goal setting and behaviour change.

This 5 week program will explore the Essence model and give evidence and examples illustrating the importance of each element and how to apply the model to personal and professional life.

The program has been delivered within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences for a number of years in training doctors and allied health practitioners in stress and lifestyle management.

As part of Mental Health Week, the University EAP provider Resolutions RTK will provide a presentation on coping with change.Coping-with-change

The purpose is to help participants understand their individual responses to change within the context of the psychology of change; and how they can best personally manage and promote a more proactive and resilient response to change. Key topics will include:

· The impact and psychology of change
· Understanding the obstacles and barriers to change
· The keys to building personal resilience

Diabetes prevention  seminar – are you at risk?

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease with nearly 1,000,000 Australians currently diagnosed and 280 Australians developing diabetes each day. The good news is that up to 60% of cases can blife diabetesde prevented.

You can learn how to reduce your chance of developing type 2 diabetes, as well as heart disease and stroke, by attending an seminar delivered by DiabetesVictoria, will cover topics such as:

  • What is diabetes?
  • Symptoms and complications of diabetes
  • Risk factors linked to type 2 diabetes
  • How to prevent type 2 diabetes

All who attend will also have the opportunity to complete the AUSDRISK tool to determine their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. All high risk, eligible employees will then be offered the opportunity to participate in a Divisional Life! program

New sustainability campus walk

When it comes to sustainability, Monash talks the talk and walks the walk – and now you can wsustain walk brochurealk the walk too.

Environmental Sustainability has produced a sustainable walking map of Clayton campu that features a 3.8 km walking loop that highlights more than 20 sustainability initiatives across campus, from share bikes to solar power to stormwater capture.

The route also takes in the Aboriginal Garden and the Rainforest Walk. If you’re feeling fit, there’s an optional 800 metre detour to view the oldest tree on campus, a River Red Gum, estimated to be more than 400 years old.

The map also shines a spotlight on Monash’s newest building, New Horizons, and outlines its ecologically sustainable design features.

The University Wellbeing KPI aims to achieve 30% participationWALKING22ripA.jpg in wellbeing events and programs.

Staff who regularly participate wellbeing related activity during their work day can now log their participation in a database to help contribute to their Faculty/Division Wellbeing KPI.

Regularly is defined as at least once per week, for a minimum of 30 minutes during your work day (Monday to Friday).

Log your participation in the Wellbeing KPI form.

Relaxation Massage

Based on Swedish techniques, this course gives you hands–on experience with practical methods to assist in the prevention and relief of common ailments such as headaches, tiredness, backaches and stress. Uses oils.

Refurbishments to Change Room Facilities and Pool Concourse

Monash Sport will be undertaking refurbishments to both the change room and pool concourse areas to provide an improved aquatic environment.

The Doug Ellis Pool will be closed for a 4 week period whilst the pool concourse is being resurfaced.

Pool Closure:

Monday 9 September – Sunday 6 October

The pool will re-open on Monday 7 October, with temporary change room facilities provided until refurbishments to the existing change room facilities are completed.

Fit Camp has a new look! ENERGISE is a six week fun, social, challenging and rewarding way of training. For those about to embark on their first fitness program or looking for a new challenge ENERGISE is for you.

All ENERGISE sessions are conducted by fully qualified health and fitness instructors who will motivate participants to challenge their current fitness levels whilst still being able to tailor the program to suit all individuals’ needs.

ENERGISE is run across Monash University Caulifield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses with programs starting throughout the year.

New Cycle Bikes!

Arriving late September, the cycle bikes at Clayton are getting an upgrade. Boasting a sleek frame design, the new SPINNER NXT bikes have a powerful chain drive system, delivering an authentic riding feel. These new bikes are able to accommodate riders from 4’10” to 6’10” so will be a comfortable ride for all!

Tennis $2 Happy Hour

Step away from your desk and onto the court! Monash Sport is making this easier for you by introducing a $2 Happy Hour during your lunch break!

All Monash staff and students are able to play up to two hours of tennis at the Clayton courts for only $2 per hour between 12-2pm Monday – Friday. This works out to be over an 85% saving off the standard Non-Student Off-Peak rate! Bookings can be made up to one week in advance and you are able to find all court booking information on our website.

Fitness Connect

Fitness Connect is a service which allows users to find and workout with someone of a similar fitness level and ability in exercise and/or sport. Exercising with a friend makes working out more enjoyable with many studies indicating the benefits regarding motivation, support and exercise longevity. The service can be found here.

Australian University Games

After a fantastic result at the 2012 Australian University Games (AUG), TeamMONASH™ is looking to take home top honours at the 2013 AUG on the Gold Coast.

The 2012 AUG saw TeamMONASH™ finish second overall, with 39 sport teams achieving a top four finish. The impressive medal tally consisted of 10 gold, 10 silver and six bronze, and a record 64 students were selected for Green and Gold (best player in the sport) honours.
