2. Paid Leadership Opportunity – PASS Leaders in the Faculty of Law, Semester 2, 2011

Are you interested in becoming a paid Peer Leader in Australia’s premier academic mentoring program?

The Faculty of Law and The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) are introducing the PASS (Peer Assisted Study Session) Program in support of LAW 2102, CONTRACT B.

PASS is an academic mentoring program which targets key 1st Year units (the “target units”). PASS provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated study sessions led by mentors called Peer Leaders for students seeking additional assistance with the target units. PASS is not a remedial program, and all students enrolled in the target units will be encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible.

PASS Leaders attend a two-day training program that focuses on how to facilitate group learning, how to conduct sessions and the concepts of promoting a learning community.

PASS sessions will commence in Week 3 of semester and continue until the end of Week 12 (ten weeks). Leaders must be able to complete a two day training program in July prior to the semester beginning.

PASS Leaders are employed by the University, and are paid approximately $120/week during Semester.  It is possible for students to work as PASS Leaders for several semesters, and leadership positions are available for experienced PASS Leaders.

We are looking to recruit students to become PASS Leaders.  The basic criteria fill the leader positions are as follows:

  1. You must have successfully completed at least 48 credit points of study in a Monash bachelor degree.
  2. You must have at least 48 credit points of study required to complete your Monash bachelor degree after Semester 1, 2011.
  3. You must have achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 60 to date across your course.
  4. You must have achieved a Distinction or better in Law 2101, Contract B.
  5. You should possess excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  6. You must be able to attend the compulsory PASS Leader Training Program at Clayton on Thursday – Friday, 21st – 22nd July.
  7. You must be able to commit to up to five hours per week to the PASS program during Semester.

Students interested in applying to be a PASS Leader should e-mail the following documents to Adrian Devey, the Monash PASS Coordinator, at adrian.devey@monash.edu by 9.00am on Monday 18 July 2011.

  1. A brief cover letter that explains why you want to be a PASS Leader in the Faculty of Law (one page maximum). Applications are especially encouraged from students receiving Centrelink, Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY, are living out of home, are first generation in their family undertaking a degree, or can demonstrate financial hardship. Please include this information in your application.
  2. A copy of your CV.  Please focus on demonstrating leadership and communication skills through relevant experience, such as tutoring or coaching, positions of responsibility in clubs and societies, or work in the retail or hospitality industries (two pages maximum).
  3. A complete copy of your latest academic transcript, including results from Semester 1, 2011 and the units in which you are enrolled in 2011 (the “unofficial” WES transcript is acceptable).
