“Understanding the NDIS” Workshops Accessible for People with Disability

During 2018-19, the Australian Federation of disability Organisations (AFDO), conducted a series of workshops called “Understanding the NDIS”, for people with disability, families and carers.

They also wanted to help those who could not attend a workshop in person so they don’t have to miss out on the information. So they filmed the workshop, from which they made 9 videos which you can find at this site.

The workshop explains important NDIS ideas and processes in plain, easy to understand language. It helps people with disability and their families to have increased understanding of the NDIS and confidence in dealing with the NDIA.

All videos have Auslan interpreting, captioning and audio description. A transcript for each video is also available.

Disability – The Lived Experience

Monash University, in conjunction with the City of Glen Eira as part of Diversity and Inclusion Week, proudly present Disability – The Lived Experience. Three presenters, all with a different lived experience of disability, will share their unique stories.

Amelia Gates with supervisors

Amelia Gates participated in Stepping Into at Department of Social Services Tasmania, and not only discovered her career potential, but developed her confidence in managing her illness in the workplace.

 Having never attempted full-time work before, Amelia had wanted to test just how much work she could take on. Once she realised her disability was nothing to hide, armed with pain-management techniques and confidence, Amelia soon realised she was very capable of full-time work. Amelia has since gone on to a role that is aligned with her university studies and career goals.

‘I don’t have the same concerns going into this new job that I did before I completed Stepping Into. I now feel confident in my ability to manage any pain and not hide my disability from co-workers,’ she said.

 Her supervisor Beverley Jefferson and colleagues also say they gained valuable skills from the internship, and learned how easy it can be to manage adjustments in the workplace.

 ‘Amelia just needed the flexibility to have time off when her disability impacted too intensely, and access to a microwave for heat packs,’ said Beverley.

‘Disability should not be a barrier – in fact, that question should be flipped. Ask instead: do employers create barriers for people with disability?’

What Are Equity Scholarships?

Equity scholarships recognise groups experiencing disadvantage and the impact it can have on their educational progress. Monash awards equity scholarships to students who come from one or more of our defined equity or personal disadvantage groups:

• Indigenous Australian descent
• recent refugees
• experiencing difficult circumstances
• have a low income
• from regional and remote areas
• having a disability or long term medical condition
• attended an under-represented school.

Monash Career Connect and WISE Employment Launch GradWISE

On Wednesday 21 August 2019 at Monash University’s Caulfield Campus Disability Support Services and Monash Career Connect officially launched the GradWISE program with WISE Employment Services.

GradWISE is a new program, developed in conjunction with Australian Universities to provide support and improve employment opportunities for students living with a disability, illness or injury.

GradWISE is designed to complement the existing supports provided by Monash to give students a customised coaching program in a one on one setting. Their aim is to give you the skills and experience you need to find the perfect graduate role. They work with you, and their pool of employers, to make the perfect match and provide all the support you need before and during your employment for as long as you need it.

Monash Career Connect also provided an information session outlining the supports already available to Monash students to maximise graduate employment opportunities, including LiLo, Student Futures, Employ-ability Workshops, and more.
