The Tasmania State Office of the Department of Social Services (DSS) has successfully welcomed several talented interns with disability into the workplace through the Stepping Into program.

Their most recent recruit, Amelia, came to the program with one particular issue she was keen to explore. She lives with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis, which causes unpredictable bursts of pain, and she wanted to test how she could work around her pain in the workplace.

More than 250 professionals from 120 leading organisations came together for the Australian Network on Disability Conference in May to discuss the forces that are driving organisations to be more accessible and inclusive. Seven key forces were highlighted as contributing to positive change and sustainable progress.

Managers and specialists across all areas of QBE have helped jobseekers with disability to gain vital workplace exposure and prepare for their chosen career.

In a recent Recruitment Skills Workshop hosted by QBE and Allegis Global Solutions, jobseekers were provided with expert application and interview tips, as well as a chance to ask important questions about how to stand out in a competitive job market.

What terms and phrases are acceptable when referring to people with disability?

With best-practice advice, examples and tips on how to be inclusive of people with disability every day, Australian Network on Disabilty’s inclusive language factsheet is a resource you can share with your whole workplace.

After a highly positive internship experience at the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Nikola Guzys-McAuliffe is eager to stay with the department to pursue her graduate career. 

She connected with DHHS through the Australian Network on Disability‘s Stepping Into program. Now, with a better understanding of how to manage work with her disability, she’s applied for the department’s 2020 graduate program.

Applications Now Open for Wood’s Australian Summer Vacation Program

This year, Wood Careers are promoting their vacation program role specifically targeted towards a student with disability.

Wood’s internship program runs throughout the summer vacation for a period of approximately 12 weeks, from early December to late February. Internships are paid employment and you will receive appropriate training and coaching to enable you to make the most of the experience. Opportunities to move onto the graduate program may be available for those looking to pursue further career options with Wood.

Are you a university student with disability looking for paid work experience that counts?

The Australian Network on Disability (AND) is offering students with disability the opportunity to intern with leading and forward-thinking organisations across a range of disciplines as part of Stepping Into.

What is Stepping Into?

Stepping Into is a paid internship program designed for university students with disability who want to gain paid, hands-on work experience in their chosen field of study. Students benefit by gaining valuable experience in their desired field of work, and by having the opportunity to develop professional networking and social skills.

About the Internships

Stepping Into internships are offered across a range of industries in both the public and private sector. Internships are available for students around the country studying Finance, Law, Social Sciences, IT, Science, Engineering and many more. Participating organisations this summer include: ANZ, Attorney General’s Department, Barwon Health, BHP, Department of Education and Training, IAG, Telstra, University of Sydney, Victoria Police, Westpac and more. Internships will generally last 4 to 8 weeks (with the opportunity for flexible work hours to manage your disability or other commitments).

Am I eligible?

• Stage of study: final or second last year of university
• Discipline of Study: All are encouraged to apply
• Citizenship status: Australian citizen, Permanent Resident or international student with full working rights in Australia

AND accepts applications from students with all types of disability including, but not limited to: physical disability, mental health conditions, sensory impairments and immunological conditions.

Over the coming weeks, we will be facilitating information sessions online. If you have applied, or are considering applying, for the Summer 2019/20 Stepping Into internship program we encourage you to dial in to one of the sessions. The presentation will offer an overview of the Stepping Into program and top tips on job applications, preparing for interviews and how to network.
