Graduate Insight Program – Accessibility and Inclusion

Are you in your penultimate (second last) or final year of either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree?

The Graduate Insight Program – Accessibility and Inclusion is aimed at people with a disability, including those who have physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments that may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. It provides insight into the Department of Justice and Community Safety’s Graduate Program and the career opportunities and pathways available.

The program will include:

  • Overview of the Graduate Program and application process
  • Panel discussion with current graduates
  • Morning tea with graduates and employees
  • Introduction to their Diversity Issues Unit
  • Career journey of a staff member with a disability

The Department of Justice and Community Safety are looking for people who want to make a difference. People who take pride in their work and who are committed to making Victoria a safer place.

PACE Mentoring Update

PACE Mentoring Program Spring Applications 2019 are Now Open!

PACE Mentoring connects students with a disability, mental illness or ongoing medical conditions with mentors from leading Australian organisations. It gives the mentees an opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a workplace setting.

Mentees meet their mentors 6-8 times at their mentors workplace, and work on activities designed to increase employability skills. You could be matched with mentors from ANZ Bank, Cummins, Arup, Bupa, IAG, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Hays and Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

Cummins Supports PACE Mentoring in Scoresby

The mentors from Cummins in Scoresby will be skilled in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering as well as HR, Supply Chain and Finance which means you will not need to travel into the city to meet your mentor.

Free PACE Mentoring Webinar

Free Webinar: PACE Mentoring – Industry Mentoring Program for Students and Jobseekers with Disability

With the unemployment rate of Australians with disability at 9.4%, compared to 4.9% of people without disability, programs like PACE are vital to equitably include people with disability in employment.

PACE, or Positive Action towards Career Engagement, is a free program connecting jobseekers with disability with mentors from leading Australian organisations. It is an opportunity for mentees to work one-on-one with a mentor to gain industry exposure, build professional networks and increase employability skills.

Run across Australia, the program is a four-month commitment between August and December. Mentors and mentees meet at the mentors workplace once a fortnight during the four months. During the program, the mentee and mentor will set goals and desired outcomes, discuss experiences, skills, and career pathways.

New Opportunity in STEMLabs

STEMLabs June Program to include possible Record Management Job Opportunities

Do you have an eye for details? A passion for finding specific information in news articles, publications, research etc? Ever considered a role in records management?

STEMLabs are currently seeking candidates to work as Records Management Officers in fixed-term 6-month employment contracts working out of the Melbourne CBD and commencing in July 2019.

The June STEMLabs program will offer suitable participants the opportunity to be considered for these Records Management roles. This program will act as the first stage of the assessment process for candidates interested in and eligible for these Records Management jobs.

What is the eligibility criteria?
• Must have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder
• Must be aged 18 years or over
• Must have Australian Citizenship
• Previous experience in a Records Management role will be very highly regarded.
• Experience using computers is essential.
• The candidate must have a strong interest in learning and performing Records Management related tasks.

PACE Mentoring – Applications Open Now!

PACE Mentoring connects students and jobseekers with disability with mentors from leading Australian organisations. You’ll be matched to an experienced professional who will help you identify and reach your career development goals and build your confidence in a workplace environment.

How does it work?

PACE runs across 16 weeks between August and December. You’ll meet with you mentor once a fortnight during that time. Meetings last around one to two hours and are planned to suit you and your mentor’s schedules.

Mentees can discuss their career goals and aspirations, and get help to develop a plan for their personal and professional development. Meetings with mentors may include:

  • Reviewing resumes and cover letters
  • Mock interviews
  • Networking with other professionals
  • Building confidence
  • Attending events and team meetings

After you apply, AND matches you with a mentor based on the information provided in your application. Consideration for matching includes your preferred industry, the skills you want to develop, the goals you set, and your location.

Join AMAZE for a Day of Discussion and Receive Valuable Information About Finding and Keeping Work

You’ll hear from Malcolm Mayfield, author of “The Hidden Curriculum of Getting and Keeping a Job: Navigating the Social Landscape of Employment”, researcher and autistic person.

Malcolm is also the founder and managing director of Autism STAR.

Malcolm will be delivering a workshop titled “The Hidden Curriculum of Getting and Keeping a Job – Practical Strategies”.

In it he will cover:

  • What is the ‘hidden curriculum’?
  • Finding a job – mentors, networking, social media, resumes
  • Job interviews – attire, behaviour, answering difficult questions, online interviews, interview follow up, what are your rights in an interview

You’ll also hear from Stephanie Crawford, a speech pathologist with over 20 years’ experience who now focuses on supporting autistic teenagers and adults to achieve their communication goals.

Stephanie will cover:

  • the hidden rules around communication in interviews and the workplace and strategies to manage these
  • how challenges with executive functioning and abstract language skills can impact on the process of getting a job
  • functional tips on preparing for an interview

This event is suitable for autistic people considering looking for work or wanting tips on getting and keeping a job, as well as people supporting autistic people through employment.

You’ll hear about employment from the perspective of an autistic person, get tips on finding a job and doing job interviews, as well as the kinds of communications often needed in the workplace and how autistic people can prepare for this.

STEMLabs – Applications OPEN!

Applications now open for the STEMLabs April 2019 Program!

This is suited for you if you are:

  • Looking for an opportunity to experiment with your STEMLabs Skills in a safe, understanding and nurturing environment.
  • Wanting to better understand your autism in order to thrive in the workplace.
  • Looking to recognise your strengths, talents and abilities in a supportive, practical and hands-on environment.
  • Have an interest in IT.

The program is free and is strictly limited to just 10 places.

Applications for the program are currently open!

The applications close promptly at 1pm on Tuesday 23rd April, 2019. The candidates will be notified of their outcome by 5pm, Friday 26th April, 2019.

The successful candidates will then be invited to the training and assessment program commencing on Monday 29th April, 2019 and conclude on Friday 17th May, 2019 between the hours of 9.30am – 4.30pm. Please note the program will not be held on any Tuesday.

The program will be held at Max Employment St Kilda, 31 Wellington Street, St Kilda, Victoria, 3182.

Participant Requirements:

  • Must be 16 years of age or over
  • Must have a diagnosis of autism (including Autism spectrum disorder, Asperger’s disorder, Autistic disorder, or PDD-NOS)
  • Must have Australian residency or citizenship
  • Must be able to attend the 3-week assessment phase beginning Monday 29th April, 2019 through to Friday 17th May, 2019. Please note training will not be held on any Tuesday.
  • Should live within a daily commutable distance of St Kilda/Melbourne CBD.

Internship Opportunities are available in: Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Darwin, Canberra, Adelaide, and Tasmania

The Australian Network on Disability runs the Stepping into Program twice a year. Stepping Into is a paid internship program designed specifically for university students with disability to assist you to gain meaningful work experience in your area of their study.

‘I don’t have the same concerns going into this new job that I did before I completed Stepping Into. I now feel confident in my ability to manage any pain and not hide my disability from co-workers,’  said Amelia

Students learn about the recruitment process, job interviews and if successful, gain exposure to degree-relevant work in a forward-thinking organisation. Internships generally last four to eight weeks (with the opportunity for flexible work hours to manage your disability or other commitments). The AND programs team are available throughout the entire process for support, advice and guidance on how to ensure your internship is a success.
