Applications Still Open – 2023 Policy Futures Graduate program

The Policy Futures Graduate Program is a two-year industry-leading program that provides recent graduates a unique opportunity to make a positive difference to Queensland communities while building a rewarding career in the Queensland public sector.

As a Policy Futures graduate you will undertake rotations across three different Queensland Government agencies, gaining exposure to diverse and complex policy environments.

Eligibility for the Program

Whatever you studied, from law to accounting, creative industries to social work – it’s likely that your insight and experience will be of value.

To be eligible for the program, you must have the right to work in Australia and have graduated from a bachelor’s degree or higher (including graduate certificate, master’s degree or PhD) between 1 January 2021 and 1 February 2023.

There is no minimum GPA required.

Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport – Have Your Say!

Did you know that one in 6 people aged 15 years and over with disability have difficulty using public transport?

A package of reforms are being proposed to reform the Transport Standards to improve public transport accessibility across Australia for people with disability.

People with disability, carers, advocacy groups, the transport industry and government are being encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed reforms.

Access to Public Transport

Access to public transport is critical for people to fully participate in the community and the economy. It enables people to travel to work or study, connects them to family, friends and their community and provides access to services such as healthcare and education.

The challenges people with disability may face when using public transport can include:

• lack of access to physical infrastructure
• difficulty in accessing information suitable to their needs
• challenges with safely navigating a successful public transport journey.

The Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) provide certainty to providers and operators of public transport services about their responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 DDA.

The Standards are in place to ensure a person with disability is afforded equitable access, service and safety levels, and to remove discrimination.

Guidelines – Online Tertiary Access for Students and Staff who are Blind or Vision Impaired

Increasingly there are demands on educators to integrate technology into tertiary education and training.

However the technology must be both accessible and inclusive to create equitable learning experiences.

Learners, educators and other professional staff who are blind or vision impaired and studying or working in the tertiary sector in Australia often experience a range of barriers, particularly when the learning is provided online.

Online Resource

This online resource has been produced by the Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET) in partnership with the National Disability Coordination Officer Program (NDCO) program and Blind Citizens Australia (BCA).

The development of these Guidelines was funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Released March 2022

Respect. Now. Always. Week – For me. For us. For everyone.

The Respect. Now. Always… for me, for us, for everyone (RNA) week will be running from Monday 7th March to Friday 11th March.

The focus of this week is to foster conversations about respect relationships on a personal, interpersonal and community level amongst Monash staff and students.

Being at University can feel pretty overwhelming and challenging at times. One thing you can be certain of is that you should always feel respected.

During Respect. Now. Always. Week, Monash will be hosting a range of events that aim to foster respect on a personal, interpersonal and community level.

Plus, there will be free food and merchandise giveaways!

Connecting Candidates with a Disability to Meaningful Study and Work Opportunities

This is a joint initiative between National Disability Services in WA and Studium.

The initiative was developed to help people with a disability overcome the challenges of gaining employment and allow proactive employers find the right candidate for their business.

On Studium, there are no job ads or applications.

Candidates simply create a free Studium profile and can be found immediately by employers using keywords and search filters.  

Key benefits of the Disability Jobs Connect Initiative

• University students with a disability can be found by employers based on their unique skills, attributes, values, education, qualifications and previous experience. They are empowered to share information about their disability if, and when, they want to.  
• Studium already has over 480 employers searching for candidates, with more expected to be onboarded when the project is launched in the coming months.
• Studium’s strong partnerships with high schools allows universities to identify students with a disability earlier than ever before and support them as they make their transition to tertiary education. 

Most of the current roles are in WA, but there are plans to expand to the east coast. For more information about this initiative, please see the attached flyer.

The Unheard Stories Film Festival

Premiering for World Hearing Day at Classic Cinemas 9 Gordon St, Elsternwick, Victoria, and travelling around Australia, this unique film festival spotlights Deaf and hard of hearing storytellers to explore and celebrate the diversity of lived experience.

Hear Me Out (run time 9 minutes)

This documentary focuses on the experiences of Sue Walters and Jackson Tait.

The narrative explains how Sue and Jackson came to have cochlear implants and features a short interview with Prof Bill Gibson.

• Hear Me Out was a winner at the London Independent Film Awards 2021.

Deafying Gravity (run time 14 minutes)

Deaf queer aerial performer Katia Schwartz reflects on life, identity and her extraordinary career in this compelling documentary short from emerging Deaf filmmaker Samuel Martin (Sam I Am).

Deafying Gravity premiered at the Sydney Film Festival in 2021, this is the first time it has had national screenings.

Amplify This! (run time 16 minutes)

Showcasing the diversity of lived experience by spotlighting individual stories, this short documentary by Soundfair explores the issues of identity, access and belonging for people who are Deaf and people who have hearing loss.

• This is a world premiere and exclusive cinema release.

We Hear You (run time 40 minutes)

We Hear You depicts the stigmas and challenges of living with hearing loss.

Executive produced by three women with hearing loss, the documentary was conceived, filmed and directed across two continents, all during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We Hear You was a winner at the Cannes World Film Festival 2021, this is an Australian premiere.
