Combating Disability Stereotypes

Global Campaign Combats Disability Stereotypes and Stigma

ILO Global Business and Disability Network (GBDN) has launched a global campaign called #InvalidOpinions, to combat the stereotypes and stigma experienced by people with disability in the labour market.

Every day, people make generalisations and assumptions about people with disability. Most of these assumptions are wrong. The campaign highlights individuals who are defying these ‘invalid opinions’ every day. It asks the viewer to confront their own beliefs and misconceptions that might be inadvertently contributing to individuals being held back in the world of work.

campaign ‘Pitch Package’ is available from the ILO website, including key messages, videos, suggested social media posts and other engagement ideas. Organisations are encouraged to localise and amplify the campaign through their own channels and networks.

“Together we can encourage everyone to think differently about disability, we can influence hiring decisions, and we can break the cycle.” (Excerpt from the #InvalidOpinions Pitch Package)

Xceptional Jobs for People with Autism

Thursday, December 19th, 2019
If you watched the 2018 ABC TV series Employable Me as it followed people with neuro-diverse conditions such as autism and Tourette Syndrome looking for work, then you came across the Xceptional, an IT recruitment firm (that gave Tim a job).

Founded by Mike Tozer as a tech service in 2017, Xceptional quickly evolved into employing people on the spectrum as software testers and data analysts. It set itself an ambitious goal of helping 1000 people find work, having already put 30 candidates in specialised IT roles.

“Our growth to date speaks to the incredible opportunity in placing neurodiverse candidates in specialised roles and shattering any stigma around hiring these candidates,” he said.

“Those on the autism spectrum, for example, often have remarkable attention to detail and advanced problem-solving skills, making them ideal candidates for complex code testing tasks.” – Mike Tozer, Xceptional’s CEO

Specialist Disability Accommodation National Seminar Series

Developing and Managing SDA

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will soon be spending more than $22 Billion per annum on services for over 460,000 people with disability across Australia. The NDIS is creating huge opportunities (and challenges) for housing development.

This includes but extends beyond the development of an additional 14,000 places of the NDIS funded Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

Seminar attendees will be provided with information about the NDIS housing landscape, SDA and development pathways as well as key issues and trends from skilled practitioners.

Who should attend?

  • Investors
  • Investment advisors
  • Developers
  • Architects
  • Building Surveyors
  • Support Providers
  • Builders
  • Architects
  • Law firms
  • Support Coordinators
  • Policymakers
  • Owners and managers of existing housing for NDIS participants
  • Self-managed superannuation fund owners

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?

On March 14, 2017, the Specialist Disability Accommodation Rules 2016 (SDA Rules) came into effect. The framework for delivery to eligible participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been established using the SDA Rules, the NDIS Act 2013 and NDIS Rules under the Act.

The SDA Rules set out the criteria for NDIS participants to have SDA funding included in their plan, including the type of dwelling that SDA funding can be used on and the way payments will be paid to registered providers of SDA.

About the SDA Design Standard

The Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Design Standard that Bruce Bromley was a co-author of provides:

  • clarity to SDA housing design requirements to be enrolled,
  • and gives providers the flexibility to respond to participant needs and preferences.

It sets out detailed design requirements that will be incorporated into newly built SDA, seeking enrolment under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

This standard details four categories of SDA design which are set out in the SDA Rules:

  • Improved Liveability
  • Robust
  • Fully Accessible
  • High Physical Support

Improved clarity of design requirements will add to provider confidence and surety of compliance. Ultimately, this will strengthen the SDA market.

Early bird seminar price: $650 per person for the full-day seminar. The Melbourne date is 31 March 2020.
